Michelin, one of the leading tire supplier for electric vehicles (EVs) in the U.S., is striving for fewer but better tires. EVs wear out tires faster due to their weight and torque, posing a challenge. Michelin aims to produce longer-lasting, environmentally friendly tires. By 2030, they plan to have 40% renewable and recyclable materials in their tires, and 100% by 2050. At a recent summit, Michelin showcased high-content sustainable material tires, set to go into production in 2025. These tires feature recycled steel, carbon black from end-of-life tires, and silica from rice husks, aiming to reduce environmental impact.

The next BIR World Recycling Convention and Exhibition will take place from (26) 27 – 29 May 2024 in Copenhagen. The recycling market has been rocked by the European Commission’s decision to ban crumb rubber infill from use in synthetic turf surfaces at the end of an eight-year transition period. Therefore, the focus has shifted to alternative opportunities, with tyre pyrolysis attracting plenty of headlines, investment and imaginative thinking. Given the huge strides forward taken in this field over recent years, it will again form one of the main topics for debate at the upcoming BIR Tyres & Rubber Committee meeting to take place in Copenhagen on Tuesday May 28.

In its efforts to advance chemical recycling, Neste has successfully conducted its first processing trial run with a new challenging raw material, liquefied discarded tires. In the processing run, Neste produced high-quality raw material for new plastics and chemicals. Swedish Tyre Recycling (SDAB) has entered into an agreement to deliver tyre raw material to feed the new tyre pyrolysis plant currently being built in Uddevalla, Sweden by the joint venture between funds managed by Antin Infrastructure Partners and Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro). The plant will utilise the innovative Enviro proprietary technology that allows the production from sorted and processed ELTs (End-of-life tyres) of valuable recovered Carbon Black (rCB) and Pyrolysis Oil in high demand by the industry to create a fully circular supply chain. The strategic agreement between the parties entails the delivery of a significant volume of the annual amount of the ELTs collected in Sweden, with deliveries commencing in 2025.

On February 23, Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has received an initial payment for costs incurred relating to the plant in Uddevalla, Sweden. The payment has been made by the joint venture established by Enviro and Antin Infrastructure Partners. In this initial stage, Enviro has received a payment of MSEK 53 million, of which MSEK 26.5 in cash and MSEK 26.5 in the form of shares in the joint venture. As previously communicated, Enviro has an option to acquire an ownership share in the joint venture that over time will ultimately correspond to approximately 30 percent. Enviro intends to fully exercise this option.

The construction of the end-of-life tire recycling plant in Sweden will be based on Enviro’s unique pyrolysis technology with the ability to extract raw materials from multi-component products. This joint venture announces the final investment decision for the construction of its first used tire recycling plant. Antin and Enviro entered into the joint venture in March of 2023 to build a series of plants in chosen European geographies.

As per the latest press release by Nokian Tyres, the company has made a long-term purchase agreement with a tire recycling joint venture. The agreement will help Nokian Tyres reach one of its key sustainability targets, which is to increase the share of recycled and renewable raw materials in tires to 50% by 2030. Nokian Tyres started to use recovered carbon black in a commercial product line in 2022. The long-term purchase agreement with a tire recycling joint venture enables its increased utilization in tires accelerating circularity and sustainability in the tire industry.

Enviro's CEO Fredrik Emilson, chairman Alf Blomqvist, and board member Peter Möller were present as the construction of Enviro Systems' recycling plant in Uddevalla officially began today. Together with Uddevalla's municipal councilor Martin Pettersson and the property owner Fratera's CEO Peter Karlsson, they held a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony with the assistance of an excavator.

The construction of Scandinavian Enviro Systems’ end-of-life tire recycling plant in Uddevalla has receieved starting notice. As previously communicated, the company expects the construction of the plant to start during the first quarter 2024. It is the municipality of Uddevalla that has notified about the permit in a letter. On February 7, Enviro, Antin Infrastructure Partners and Michelin announced the final investment decision for the plant and that the joint venture, formed between Enviro and Antin, has started to place orders for key materials and machinery for the plant.
