Jaipur, India - The Tyre & Rubber Recycling Association of India (TRRAI) is proud to announce its second conclave, scheduled for August 24th at Ananta Spa and Resort, Jaipur. This prestigious event aims to bring together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to discuss the future of tyre recycling in India, focusing on sustainable practices and innovative solutions.

The Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) is delighted to announce George Eustice, the former DEFRA Secretary, will deliver the keynote speech at their annual gathering on Tuesday, 24 September. Those attending the day will hear from the last administration’s the longest serving DEFRA minster. Mr Eustice held numerous ministerial positions in the Environment department from 2013 until he stepped down as Secretary of State following the arrival of Liz Truss as Prime Minister in 2022.

In response to an inquiry from Tyre and Rubber Recycling, DeFRA provided an update on their plans for waste tyre management. The department confirmed that the Labour government intends to reform the waste exemptions system, including the removal of the T8 exemption. This initiative aligns with the new Secretary of State's goal of developing a roadmap toward a zero-waste economy, which aims to enhance resource efficiency and cut down on emissions and waste.

While the expansion of rubber plantations can negatively impact tropical forests, sustainable practices can mitigate these effects by protecting biodiversity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, promoting dignified working conditions and upholding workers' rights on rubber plantations is crucial to fostering an ethical and sustainable industry.

On May 21, 2024, UK-based ReTyre Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Indian Rubber Materials Research Institute (IRMRI), under the Indian Ministry of Commerce. This agreement involves ReTyre-Bharat Pvt. Ltd, ReTyre’s Indian division. The MOU focuses on technological research, product development, and mutual knowledge exchange. Mr. Shravan Bansal, Founder of ReTyre Ltd, stated: “With this MOU, ReTyre has taken a leap forwards in the strategic development of the company and its technology.” The collaboration with Siemens will support the introduction of their “recycling at source” technology in the tire recycling sector.

On 15 April, EuRIC’s tyre recycling event “Reinventing the Wheel: Advancing tyre recycling”, brought together all the value chain stakeholders to address tyre circularity challenges and collaborate on opportunities for increased material recovery in the EU. Held in Brussels, the event emphasised the significant untapped potential for tyre circularity. Key requirements include improved ecodesign of tyres, mandatory recycled content targets either in new tyres or other applications, and chemical legislation for recycled materials from tyres based on risk assessment rather than the precautionary principle, all fostered by harmonised EU-wide End-of-Waste criteria.
