According to the latest press release by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), every year, a staggering 500,000 tons of tires in Australia reach the end of their road, and shockingly, only a mere 15% of these materials are currently being repurposed in Australia. The rest are either exported overseas as fuel replacements or are stockpiled, dumped, or landfilled, contributing to an environmental challenge of immense proportions.

Genan has announced today that its plant in Ovar, Portugal, has achieved the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) certification. The RCS is a standard that plays a significant role in the process chains by effectively tracking recycled raw materials within the supply chain, in accordance with the Content Claim Standard requirements. When end-of-life tires reach the end of their life cycle, they become hazardous for the environment and human health if they are dumped in landfills. Made of synthetic rubber, chemicals, and additives, these tires contaminate water and land, pose a high risk of fire, generate harmful gases when burned, and serve as breeding grounds for insect-borne epidemics. These concerns are particularly relevant in Mexico, where an estimated 32 million tires are discarded annually, equivalent to one tire per second. Unfortunately, only 12% of these tires are recycled, with the majority ending up in landfills.

IMC Outdoor Living produces rubber mulch, a resilient and sustainable alternative to traditional wood mulch, made from 100% recycled tires. The new Hebron facility located 30 miles east of Columbus, OH, includes 60,000 square feet for production and an additional 70,000 square feet of warehouse space to store and ship premium rubber mulch that is used for playground and landscape applications. The new facility will allow IMC Outdoor Living to expand its presence in the Midwest and focus on serving the region’s parks and recreation departments, schools, municipalities, and government agencies.

Australian surf brand Rip Curl has started an initiative to recycle used wetsuits in collaboration with TerraCycle, private U.S.-based recycling business headquartered in Trenton, New Jersey. Old and useless surfing wetsuits will be recycled as part of the Recycle Your Wetsuit program so that the materials obtained can be used to create soft rubber playground matting. In 2021, the program was initially introduced in Australia, and since then, it has also been promoted in the United States, France, Portugal, and Spain. Surfers in Australia have the option to recycle any surfing wetsuit at authorized stores either in-person or via mail. The Recycle Your Wetsuit program has now been expanded to reduce the impact of wetsuit waste.

European Commission asks the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to assess potential risks in playgrounds. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in synthetic turf infill materials will be reviewed for potential risks by ECHA. The European Commission (EC) ordered the agency to analyze any dangers to children in a letter dated January 6 to ECHA executive director Sharon McGuinness. The study's scope includes loose mulches and granulated PAHs used in playgrounds, gardens and landscaping. According to the EC, the assessment's goal is to determine if the respective applicable concentration limits for eight PAHs found in infill materials are effective.

According to a recent study, recycling used tires has less of an impact on the environment than using new materials to make the same items. In order to fulfill producer obligations under the Tire Regulation 225/18 and the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act (RRCEA) of Ontario, producers must receive services that help them reach the regulatory goal of collecting and recycling 100 percent of the used tires they sell into the market. This involves delivering them to processing facilities and confirming how they are transformed into new products for authorized usage as Tire Derived Products on the market (TDP). A TDP replaces the more traditional method of producing goods by using fresh, or "raw," resources. People anticipate that recycled tire products will be more environmentally friendly than the new materials they replace. The goal of the Scrap Tire Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a study in which seven members of the Canadian Association of Tire Recycling Agencies voluntarily participated, was to quantify this expectation (CATRA). The study involved gathering and analyzing data from participating tire recycling companies utilizing information from 2017 to 2020.
