AZuR network coordinator Christina Guth moderated a kick-off meeting of authorities, road construction companies, science and research, as well as the tire and recycling industry representatives that decided to found an official project group on the subject of rubberized asphalt. Every year almost 300 million scrap tires are generated in the United States. One of the most beneficial uses involves producing Ground Tire Rubber (GTR) from scrap tires and using the GTR to create Rubber-Modified Asphalt (RMA). RMA has been used in the U.S. since the 1960s, but extensive market adoption is yet to occur, although use of rubber modified asphalt has increased approximately 50% since 2017. As the Biden Administration continues to coordinate the implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), joined by 15 stakeholder organizations sent a joint letter highlighting available technologies to support national infrastructure improvements: rubber modified asphalt and tire derived aggregate. The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet is now accepting grant proposals for projects that promote the use of recycled Kentucky end-of-life tires. As reported by Kentucky Today, the Cabinet will provide grant funding for landscaping mulch projects, walking trails, poured-in-place playgrounds, sidewalks or other surfaces, horse trailer or stall mats, tree wells or other products utilizing recycled tires from Kentucky. Projects that are not eligible for grants include athletic field or loose crumb rubber playground applications, tire-derived aggregate, tire-derived fuel, rubber-modified asphalt or civil engineering projects.
