According to the article by The News International, Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has drafted guidelines to regularise pyrolysis plants presently operating across the Punjab province without any legal cover. Sources in EPA revealed that during the recent smog season strict action was taken against these plants and many were demolished and sealed either by the District Administration or by the EPA. Presently, majority of the pyrolysis plants operating in the province used to dispose off used tyres and extract carbon, wires and low quality furnace oil, which were sold in the open market.

Although the journey is long, the gradual selection of raw materials has already begun to give shape to the future tire construction. The list includes agricultural waste, such as ash from rice husks, dandelion rubber, and recycled rubber or PET bottles. Claus Petschick, Head of Sustainability at Continental Tires, is clear about Continental’s mission, saying, “Continental is on the road toward becoming the most progressive manufacturer in the tire industry in terms of sustainability. We aim to use 100 percent sustainable materials in our tire products by 2050 at the latest.” He adds, “Our innovative power enables us to break new and even more sustainable ground. This encompasses everything from the origin and sourcing of our materials through to the reuse and recycling of our tires.”

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) has made a significant breakthrough in its expansion plans, with the Homburg City Council voting unanimously to approve the sale of a city-owned property to the eco-friendly end-of-life tyre (ELT) recycling company. The land sale allows Pyrum to construct a new pyrolysis plant in Saarland, which will have three pyrolysis reactors and a processing capacity of roughly 20,000 tonnes of ELT each year. The company is due to sign the contract to secure the land soon, allowing the planning and approval process to begin immediately. The new plant will be a valuable addition to Pyrum's existing operations, which include a main plant in Dillingen. Like the Dillingen plant, the Homburg facility will utilize Pyrum's patented pyrolysis technology, which allows the company to recycle ELT sustainably. With support from the city of Homburg, Pyrum is committed to building a bridge to a circular economy that enriches the tradition-steeped automotive location with end-of-life tyre recycling.

Enviro (Scandinavian Enviro Systems) is to begin delivering recovered pyrolysis oil as part of the order from Preem that was announced in November of last year. Preem will use the oil as a raw material for production tests and the order value is estimated at approximately MSEK 2. Through production testing, Preem will determine how suitable the oil is for the production of different biofuels. These tests will take place at Preem’s refinery in Lysekil, which has already been granted a permit to conduct production tests of pyrolysis oil. This oil will be produced at Enviro’s plant in Åsensbruk where Enviro extracts for example oil from end-of-life vehicle tires using its proprietary and patented recycling technology.

Pyrum Innovations AG, a leading player in tire pyrolysis, has successfully installed two pyrolysis reactors for its production lines 2 and 3 at its main plant in Dillingen/Saar. This marks a significant milestone in the expansion of the plant and represents the first step towards increasing the recycling capacity of the facility. As per the recent press release, a newly approved standard from ASTM International’s recovered carbon black committee (D36) provided a test that will help to differentiate products and provide a quality control tool for producers and users. Recovered carbon black (rCB) is a recycled product made from end-of-life tires. The new standard, which will shortly be published as D8474, specifies a thermogravimetric (TGA) technique for determining the amount of organic residue, how much fixed carbon is in total, and how much ash is in recovered carbon black.
