The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announced the launch of its inaugural Industry Leadership Awards program. TRAC’s Industry Leadership Awards recognize outstanding individuals and companies for their dedication and commitment to excellence in the tire and rubber industry, including end-of-life tire management businesses and other businesses focused on sustainability.

Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) is proud to announce that it received a 2021 Award of Distinction from the Canadian Society of Association Executives for its new website design. CSAE Awards of Distinction recognize outstanding achievement in association leadership, structure, and governance; and/or the planning and execution of internal, external, and integrated programs that serve associations’ members and/or engage external stakeholders and volunteers. On November 26, 2020, the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announced a new board member and a new board chair, following the resignation of Tony Mougios of Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. Dr. Antoine Sautenet of Michelin was elected as a Director to complete Mr. Mougios unexpired term and elected 2nd Vice-Chair of the Board. Maureen Kline of Pirelli moves into the role as Chair of the Board, Paul Downey of Pliteq becomes 1st Vice Chair and Matt Livigni of Continental Tire remains as Treasurer.

The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada has recently announced the appointment of Carol Hochu as incoming President & CEO. Ms. Hochu brings a lifetime of experience and successful track record of leading Canadian associations and non-profit organizations. Most recently, she led the Canadian Plastics Industry Association as President and CEO for nearly a decade, and prior to that she served as Executive Director of the Ontario Electronic Stewardship. As an accomplished association executive, in all her past roles Ms. Hochu served as a passionate industry advocate who successfully raised industry profiles and advanced important industry issues with key stakeholders, influencers, and government; and she expertly navigates all aspects of association management, including government, member and public relations.

The event will become a perfect platform uniting tire and rubber industry professionals from all over the world. Experts representing all layers of the industry, as well as state authorities and scholars will share their perspectives on the state of affairs for tire recycling. They will also shed light on sustainability and what drives producers towards circular economy models, touch upon topics of tire-derived fuel, tire-derived aggregate, rubberized asphalt, ensuring safety at tire recycling plants, etc.

PROs collaborate with service providers on behalf of tire manufactures. They manage collection and recovery of scrap tires, and can help with research and development. eTracks, incorporated by the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC), is one of the PROs functioning in Ontario and it’s responsible for 80 percent of collection and recovery obligations. Ontario now tends to view end-of-life tires mostly as resources rather than waste as it’s possible to process them and get valuable products such as crumb rubber, ground rubber, modified asphalt, gravel substitute. In addition, recycled products can be then used for construction projects, or in paving flooring and so much more.

The USTMA along with other organizations such as Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) identifies itself as an advocate for sustainability promoting environmental protection, economic and social development. The association has repeatedly emphasized that it is attempting to advance and support sustainability, including tire recycling practices. This goal was voiced once again by Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president and CEO during 2018 Rubber Recycling Symposium – the event sponsored by the USTMA, TRAC and its subsidiary eTracks Tire Management Systems.

Starting from January 1, 2019, new scrap tire legislation will come into force in Canada’s Ontario. However, the regional authorities are now concerned that not all tire producers are aware of new laws, thus they won’t be able to comply with them. The new legislation outlining expanded recycling duties of tire producers, the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, comes after it was passed two years ago, and it will replace local Waste Diversion Act and Ontario Tire Stewardship. The former managed to successfully implement waste control strategies and find markets for end-of-life tires, stressed John Armiento of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
