Large industrial companies are involved at a crucial point in the process of sustainable tire recycling. AZUR network coordinator Christina Guth welcomes the joining of Zeppelin Systems GmbH at the turn of the year: "With the Zeppelin systems, the tire recycling cycle is efficiently closed." After announcing the capability to demonstrate a 70% sustainable-material tire in January 2022, Goodyear, – one of the world's largest tire companies – working with its supply base, plans to sell a tire with up to 70% sustainable-material content in 2023. On January 4, Goodyear unveiled a demonstration tire comprised of 90% sustainable materials. This demonstration tire has passed all applicable regulatory testing as well as Goodyear’s internal testing. This demonstration tire also tested to have lower rolling resistance when compared to the reference tire, made with traditional materials. Lower rolling resistance means this demonstration tire has the potential to offer better fuel savings and carbon footprint reduction.

Smithers – a global leader in rubber, plastics and polymer testing and market reports – spoke with tires expert Howard Colvin, author of Smithers’ latest report The Future of Carbon Black vs. Silica in Tires to 2027, about the challenges facing the tire industry and expected developments. Howard Colvin has many years of experience in the tire industry with 22 years at Goodyear and 12 years with Cooper. At Cooper he worked in the Advanced Technology group and led Cooper’s consortium of academia, industry and government to develop a guayule concept tire. Howard is the 2021 Melvin Mooney Distinguished Technology award winner for exhibiting exceptional technical competency in rubber science and technology.

The 63% sustainable-material demonstration truck tire includes 15 featured ingredients across 20 tire components, including those described below. This demonstration tire is labelled “A” in fuel efficiency meaning it can offer the same fuel saving as the most efficient Goodyear truck tires currently offered.

When a tire is recycled through tire pyrolysis, the solid material that remains from the pyrolysis of the rubber, commonly referred to as tire char or raw rCB, is composed of carbon black and varying amounts of impurities, such as silica, zinc, and sulphur. Goodyear has created a 70% sustainable-material content version of its Assurance all-season tire. The company is making strides toward its aim of developing a tire that is 100 percent sustainable by 2030.

The company said the tire contains 42.8% sustainable materials, which include bio-sourced and recycled materials. The tire is built with natural rubber silica, recovered carbon black and reclaimed rubber from end-of-life tires.
