When you browse around, some things come to light that are worth not forgetting, such as a conference paper that was published exactly 30 years ago in August 1993. “A multiple-product approach to the processing of used tires” (Michal A. Serio, et al., 1993) is a remarkably accurate vision of chemical recycling of end-of-life tires (ELTs), as it is experiencing a boom in the last few years. The authors presented their well-founded proposals for sustainable recycling of ELTs through pyrolysis at a conference of the American Chemical Society (ACS Division of Fuel Chemistry) in the USA. About 20 years later, namely in 2011, the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) within the framework of the Basel Convention (191 signatory states) approved the chemical recycling of ELTs by pyrolysis as Environmental Sound Management (ESM). This classification was subsequently also included in the European regulations. In this exposé of the remarkably visionary work, the original text is quoted and only occasionally an outdated term is replaced by the one used today. Replacements and comments are in Italic. Pyrolysis, an advanced chemical recycling route for End-of-Life Tires (ELT), is experiencing a boom in the last few years. As seen objectively, there is no one best design and/or process mode. Different options can be considered depending on the local circumstances and/or targeted product yields and qualities. While only a small portion of global ELT arisings (31 million tons per year) are currently finding their way to thermochemical decomposition, recent developments are showing strong signs of promising opportunities.

Lummus Technology, a global provider of process technologies and value-driven energy solutions, and MOL Group, the leading integrated Central Eastern European oil and gas corporation, have announced their agreement to cooperate in the deployment and integration of chemical recycling of plastics at MOL’s assets in Hungary and Slovakia. Chemical recycling of plastics is part of MOL’s commitment to collect close to 5 million tonnes of municipal solid waste, which includes the treatment and related investments.

Bridgestone Corporation recently announced that it has commenced the production of tire derived oil and recovered carbon black through pyrolysis of used tires using test units installed at Bridgestone Innovation Park in Kodaira City, Tokyo. This initiative is aimed at promoting the social implementation of chemical recycling technologies that enable precise pyrolysis of used tires. Contec S.A. – a company that specializes in producing sustainable raw materials by upcycling end-of-life tires – has successfully secured a total of EUR 15 million in funding this year. The largest Polish manufacturer of steel roofing and facades – Pruszyński – has contributed an additional EUR 5 million to the funds already provided by VINCI and the Warsaw Equity Group. These two entities had initially invested EUR 10 million in Contec back in March 2023. The investment will be used to triple the capacity of Contec’s current facility in Szczecin, Poland, and to position the company for the construction of several new commercial plants across Europe. This will support Contec's mission to accelerate the transformation of the manufacturing industry toward carbon neutrality.

According to the latest press release by Audi Hungaria Zrt., as a result of the company’s collaboration with New Energy Kft., from now on, tire waste generated at the site of Audi Hungaria in Győr will be chemically recycled, thereby avoiding the release of microplastics and the hazardous substances that leach from them into the environment during recovery. The process used for this is pyrolysis, in which tire waste is chemically converted into oil. The oil produced is used by petrochemical companies to produce new plastics, while the resulting recovered carbon black (rCB) is utilized in tire production. The gases produced during pyrolysis are used to generate the high temperatures needed for the process.

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum), a pioneer in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tires (ELTs) based on its patented pyrolysis technology, is taking the next step in its cooperation with Mercedes-Benz AG. In future, the company will recycle several hundred tonnes of used tires from the Mercedes-Benz Used Parts Centre every year. The company produces pyrolysis oil from the ELTs using its own innovative process. The pyrolysis oil produced is then supplied to the cooperation partner BASF SE, which uses the oil as a raw material in combination with biomethane in the production of virgin plastics for the manufacture of Mercedes-Benz vehicle components.
