Tyrecycle – an Australian end-of-life tyre recycling company – moves to expand its operations in Sydney with a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant. Australian e-magazine Waste Management Review reports that Australia’s leading tyre recycler, Tyrecycle is gearing up for a purpose-built multi-million dollar rubber crumb manufacturing plant in Sydney, following significant growth in the uptake of its products produced from end-of-life tyres. Tyrecycle Chief Executive Officer Jim Fairweather says the move is to cater for strong demand over the past two years, with the company experiencing a 30 per cent growth in sales of rubber crumb.

ShipInsight – an online magazine focused on ship operation, ship management and marine journalism – reports that an energy and commodity trader Vitol and Wastefront, the Norwegian waste tire pyrolysis company, have announced a 10-year offtake agreement for the production of liquid hydrocarbons (pyrolytic fuel oil) and certain non-liquid products which will be produced at Wastefront’s first waste tire pyrolysis plant in Sunderland, UK, on its completion in 2023. In addition to the offtake agreement, Vitol and Wastefront have also established a framework agreement for the 10-year offtake from future end-of-life tire pyrolysis plants to be developed and built by Wastefront.

The European Tire and Rubber Manufacturers Association reports that in the context of the “Circular Economy Stakeholder Conference: Together for a cleaner and more competitive Europe” held on 3-4 November 2020, ETRMA joined forces to bring further the EU Commission commitment to scope, during 2020-2021, the development of possible further Unionwide end-of-waste (EoW) and by-product criteria (BP).

Tyre Stewardship Australia reports that it partners with RMIT University on a ground-breaking research project evaluating the performance of crumb rubber in asphalt made from end-of-life car tyres. The project, co-funded by TSA, RMIT University and the Victorian Department of Transport (DoT, Australia), will evaluate to what extent and in what proportion – when mixed with truck tyres, for instance – passenger car tyres can be recycled in road asphalt pavements.

This opinion was voiced by experts during a meeting of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) at its Tires & Rubber Committee on October 15, 2020. Novel asphalt additive for better, safer and environment-friendly roads has been developed by an EU-funded project Silent Rubber Pavements. The pavement industry faces different challenges in realizing more silent and eco-friendly pavements that need less maintenance. Crumb rubber, a granulated material obtained from scrap tires or other rubber goods, is a promising solution held back by several barriers.
