A team of researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS) reports about achieving a major technological breakthrough by converting end-of-life tires into super-light aerogels that have a wide range of applications. This is the first time that aerogels are made from end-of-life tires, the University reports. The new rubber aerogels demonstrate remarkable properties — they are extremely light, highly absorbent, very durable, and they are also very efficient at trapping heat and sound.

A trial organised by Transport for Victoria saw the introduction of OLEXOCRUMB®, the most recent product innovation from Puma Energy’s Global Bitumen Technology Centre in Altona, Victoria (Australia). The new asphalt binder was trialled in close collaboration with Boral Asphalt, as part of the Boral/Puma technology program. The company reports that OLEXOCRUMB® was specifically formulated to comply with existing Australian roads polymer modified binders (PMB) specifications.

On March 16, 2020 Liberty Tire Recycling – the biggest tire recycling operator in the United States – announced that it acquired a premier tire removal and recycling company Lakin Tire to create a “new national footprint with best-in-class service and a commitment to sustainability.” Liberty Tire Recycling reports that is made the acquisition of Lakin Tire with support from its majority equity sponsor The Carlyle Group. Lakin, headquartered in Santa Fe Springs, California and with operations focused throughout the Western United States and the Northeast, is regarded as one of the most established and technologically advanced tire removal and recycling companies in the United States. Combined, the two companies collect over 180 million tires per year and recycle approximately 2.6 billion pounds of rubber into innovative, sustainable products. Thomas Womble, CEO of Liberty Tire, will continue to lead the combined business, while key leaders of Lakin, including Bob Lakin and Sean Lakin, will take on expanded roles within Liberty to drive continued world-class customer service. Bob Lakin will maintain an equity ownership stake in Liberty.

According to the recent announcement by the authority, the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) issued $2.2 million in grants to seven companies in the state under its Tire Incentive Program to supports recyclers’ efforts to manufacture products from waste tires.

They manage collection and recovery of scrap tires, and can help with research and development. eTracks, incorporated by the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC), is one of the PROs functioning in Ontario and it’s responsible for 80 percent of collection and recovery obligations. Ontario now tends to view end-of-life tires mostly as resources rather than waste as it’s possible to process them and get valuable products such as crumb rubber, ground rubber, modified asphalt, gravel substitute. In addition, recycled products can be then used for construction projects, or in paving flooring and so much more.
