The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) announced its new Board of Directors following its Annual General Meeting of members held on June 14, 2023. At that meeting, the members elected Lawrence Kumar of Yokohama Tire (Canada) as a new Director. Based in Langley, B.C., Mr. Kumar has over two decades of experience in the tire industry and is currently the Controller at Yokohama Tire (Canada). “We welcome Lawrence to the TRAC Board. His business experience and knowledge are sure to be of great value to TRAC in the coming years,” says Paul Downey, President and CEO of Pliteq, and TRAC Chair of the Board.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems’ (Enviro) major shareholder Michelin has developed a racing tire for this year's edition of the Le Mans 24-hour race that contains a full 63% sustainable materials, including recovered carbon black (rCB) from Enviro's plant in Åsensbruk, Sweden. The tire was used on one of the cars taking part in the famous race's 100th anniversary. For 25 consecutive years, from 1998 to 2022, Michelin tires have been fitted to the winning cars. For this year's edition, which took place between June 10 and 11, Michelin has developed a racing tire that contains a whopping 63% envaironmentally sustainable materials, including recovered carbon black from Enviro.

The Chairman of Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB (publ) (Enviro), Alf Blomqvist, and the company’s CEO, Thomas Sörensson, have been appointed to represent Enviro on the board of the new joint venture. The joint venture’s first board meeting was held on June 1, 2023. The joint venture was formed by Enviro and Antin Infrastructure Partners to establish a large-scale tire recycling company based on Enviro’s technology. As previously announced, the joint venture is planning to establish plants across Europe by 2030 with a total recycling capacity of one million tons of end-of-life tires per year.

According to The Drive’s press release, Michelin has developed an algorithm, called SmartWear, which can predict tire wear down to the millimeter by using data from existing sensors on the vehicle combined with environmental data. The algorithm was developed specifically for Michelin's tires, but the company hopes to make it brand-agnostic. With vehicles getting bigger and heavier, and electric cars wearing out tires more quickly, Michelin's technology is particularly useful for automakers.

According to CBC News, Ontario’s Resource Productivity & Recovery Authority (RPRA), which oversees recycling in the province, may soon impose fines of $200,000 or more on the province's tire manufacturers. According to the agency, the five companies in Ontario that collect and recycle end-of-life tires are all not in compliance with provincial legislation. The orders allege that throughout the province, the industry is not providing enough sites that collect used tires.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) and Antin Infrastructure Partners (Antin) announced to have established a joint venture (JV) in order to, based on Enviro's technology, create a large-scale tire recycling group. The JV plans to establish plants across Europe with a total capacity of up to one million tons of end-of-life tires recycled annually by 2030. The JV partners have agreed on a plan for the financing of the new plant expansion. Antin, a leading private equity firm focused on infrastructure, will finance the initial investments.

During Tire Technology Expo 2023, which takes place from March 21-23 in Hannover, Germany, Michelin won two international awards, bestowed by a panel of experts from the tire industry, the academic world, and the press: • The Tire Manufacturer of the Year award, won for the sixth time, an absolute record. • The Environmental Achievement of the Year- Tire Design award, for the first two tires approved for road use (cars and buses) that include 45% and 58% sustainable materials respectively. This award belongs to a new category, rewarding the technological advances in the industry that are most respectful of the environment.
