Ontario’s tire recycling system is facing renewed scrutiny as collection challenges, proposed regulatory changes and supply chain pressures affect the movement of end-of-life tires across the province. In a commentary for Autosphere, Carol Hochu, President of the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada, said the current situation shows how complex tire recycling systems can be, involving collectors, haulers, processors, end markets and regulatory oversight. Disruptions in any part of this network can create bottlenecks across the system, affecting tire generators, producer responsibility organizations and recycling service providers. The discussion comes as Ontario considers new measures intended to strengthen accountability, prevent large tire stockpiles and ensure that used tires continue moving into responsible recycling and repurposing channels.

Dickinson County Road Commission has worked with Michigan Technological University and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy on research projects involving ground tire rubber modified asphalt since 2018. Officials said this work has helped the Road Commission build practical experience with the material and better understand how it performs in local road conditions.

In order to promote the sustainable development of road engineering, this study used waste tire rubber powder (RP) and surface organic layered double hydroxide (SOM-LDHs) to modify 70# matrix asphalt. The Box–Behnken design response surface method with three factors (rubber powder content, surface organic layered double hydroxide content, shear temperature) and three responses (penetration, ductility, softening point) was used to optimize the preparation parameters. The optimum formula was determined to be 21.7% rubber powder content, 4.8% surface organic layered double hydroxide content, and 160 °C shear temperature.

In 2017, REDISA was unlawfully removed, a finding confirmed by the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2019. Yet, it was never reinstated. Responsibility instead shifted to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s Waste Management Bureau. The Bureau has for eight years consistently failed to meet its tyre diversion targets. In the past few months, the Bureau has gone to tender to establish a million square metres of waste tyre depot space – enough to store over a million tonnes of waste tyres – and to sell off some R100 million worth of tyre recycling equipment that it bought but could not put to use. This is not management, it is controlled dumping. The consequences have been stark: job losses, dangerously overcrowded depots that pose real fire risks, discarded tyres contaminating groundwater, along with widespread illegal burning that releases toxic fumes

Tire recyclers in Europe are calling on EU policymakers to introduce ecodesign requirements that improve tire recyclability, support demand for recycled rubber and increase transparency across the value chain. The proposals were outlined by Recycling Europe Tyres in a position paper published on May 18, as the EU prepares future product rules under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.
