Continental has obtained the highest rating as a global leader in the implementation of sustainability measures and strategies from the international Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for the fourth year in a row ("Supplier Engagement Rating") for its work in 2021. The evaluation is based on information on corporate governance, Scope 3 emissions, and supply chain management as a whole that was given by the relevant companies. In order to minimize environmental risks and emissions, CDP pays particular attention to strategies and procedures that help make those risks and emissions observable throughout the value chains.

A "controlled withdrawal" from the Russian market has been declared by Continental AG in response to the challenges caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. During the annual financial results press conference on March 8, Continental’s CEO Nicolai Setzer said that the invasion "driven up prices for goods, raw materials, and energy". This, according to Setzer, is the reason of the withdrawal. “This includes selling our business operations in Russia – such as our plant in Kaluga. We are already at an advanced stage of the sale process here. The regulatory approvals required to ensure its successful conclusion have not been made yet”, said Nicolai Setzer.

Continental continues its commitment as a main and safety partner as well as a supplier of tyres for the Tour de France. Prior to this year’s edition of the Tour de France begins in Copenhagen on July 1, 2022, Continental will extend its long-standing, trusting partnership and sponsorship activities up to and including 2027. Recycled carbon black, crucial for tire stability and durability, helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower CO2 emissions. Continental is committed to a closed-loop recycling system, where end-of-life tires become raw materials for new products, aligning with its long-term sustainability strategy to achieve 100% sustainable materials in tires by 2050.

On International Recycling Day, May 17, Continental reiterated its commitment to achieving full carbon neutrality by 2050 and becoming the leading tire company in sustainability. Continental has long been reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, promoting the circular economy, and cutting emissions. Their Tires Vision 2030 sets ambitious targets: 60% sustainable materials in their products, 20% waste reduction, a 95% recycling rate, and a 20% decrease in energy and water consumption.

Continental has sold its plant in Kaluga, Russia, to Russian company S8 Capital. With this step, Continental has divested the majority of its activities in Russia as part of its announced controlled withdrawal from the Russian market – a decision taken by the technology company in response to the war against Ukraine. The transaction has been approved by the relevant authorities. Continental produced passenger tires at the plant in Kaluga. Air conditioning and power steering lines as well as parts for air suspension systems for the Russian market were also manufactured there.

During the latest international trade fair IAA Mobility, Continental presented innovative technologies that set new standards. One topic of focus is sustainability. As early as 2021, the tire manufacturer focused on the use of silica from agricultural waste, polyester from recycled PET and other renewable and recyclable materials with the Conti GreenConcept concept tire. Continental has now incorporated many of these technologies into its series tires. With the UltraContact NXT, the company launched the most sustainable series tire to date last year. This underlines Continental’s claim to be the most progressive manufacturer in the tire industry when it comes to sustainability.

The recent news from Continental – a prominent tire manufacturer – proves that the industry is expected to becoming more sustainable which, in turn, will affect tire recycling industry as well. In late June 2020, Continental received the Red Dot Design Award for Urban Taraxagum – bicycle tires made from dandelion rubber. Moreover, the tire manufacturer recently made a very positive announcement related to sustainability. Now that Claus Petschick heads new Sustainability department, sustainable management is expected to become an integral part of Continental’s “Vision 2030” strategy program. Besides, the company will continue engaging in consistent research and development of new technologies, alternative materials and environmentally friendly production processes in the tire sector.

Continental Tyres has received the “Tyre Industry Environmental and Sustainable Solution of the Year” award at the 2024 National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) Tyre Industry Awards. Presented during the NTDA’s 94th Annual Dinner, the award celebrates Continental’s commitment to sustainability, surpassing competitors like Bridgestone, Hankook, Marangoni, and Michelin.
