Episode 6 of Video Insights by Tyre & Rubber Recycling magazine features Ankit Kalola, General Manager at Fornnax, recorded following the Recovered Carbon Black Conference in Barcelona organised by Smithers. In the interview, Kalola outlines Fornnax’s role in supplying integrated shredding and granulation systems that convert whole tyres into rubber chips and granules suitable for use as pyrolysis feedstock.

Recent updates from the AZuR network point to continued momentum in the development of Europe’s circular tyre economy, with a focus on tire recycling technologies, infrastructure applications, and international knowledge exchange.

The BlackCycle project has been focused on developing deconstruction technologies to recover the different rubber coming from very precise parts of the tyre. The objective is to enhance the quality of the recycled raw materials and add value for subsequent industrial processes such as granulation, pyrolysis, or micronization. After design studies and initial testing, two deconstruction technologies have been chosen: the Outside Rubber Cutting (ORC) for recovering tire treads from passenger cars and trucks, and the Inside Rubber Grinding (IRG) for extracting innerliners from truck tires. These machines incorporate groundbreaking technological solutions, enabling the treatment of tires from any brand and size with near full automation. Patents for the new detection technology and steering robots will be completed in 2023.

Ardefors spoke to Tyre & Rubber Recycling about the latest goings on with SDAB from rubber granulation to energy recovery to new tyre recycling facilities.</

CM informs that the demand for tire-derived fuel (TDF) is significantly increasing thanks to its advantages over traditional fuels, such as providing higher heating value than coal or wood. The heat produced from TDF is approximately thirty percent higher than that of coal and more than twice that of wood. TDF also provides lower sulfur oxide emissions when compared with coal, which has a higher sulfur content. Furthermore, combustion of TDF provides better operational consistency than other fuels used in waste-to-energy systems.

In AZuR’s (Allianz Zukunft Reifen) network, material recyclers are important buyers of end-of-life tires for the secondary raw materials. Recently, AZuR introduced Austrian company KIAS Recycling GmbH as a partner. KIAS Recycling GmbH operates the only used tire recycling plant in Austria, which is one of the most modern in Europe. At the Ohlsdorf site, up to 30,000 tons of end-of-life tires are broken down into their individual components and the majority of them recycled.

“Sustainability without compromise” – ROWA Masterbatch says it is imperative that the plastics industry also participates in minimizing the use of fossil resources by closing material cycles in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. ROWA Masterbatch intends to play an important role in this and is therefore successively expanding its portfolio to include increasingly more sustainable products. The company highlights that during the development of the ROWALID® Eco product range, the emphasis was placed on the use of raw materials that significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Chile's Ministry of Environment published the first decree linked to Law 20,920 in January 2021, which states that by 2030, all tires on mining trucks with 45-inch or larger tires must be recycled 100 percent. The gradual implementation of tire recycling in mining must start in 2023.

The manufacturer reports that the tyre baler conveyor combined with either the MK2 or MK3 tyre baler is the fastest, most user-friendly way to bale large volumes of tyres. Rather than have operators spend valuable time searching for tyres, or walking to a pile of tyres and back to the baler repetitively the conveyor hopper is loaded with tyres via telehandler in a matter of minutes.
