For many years, tire recycling industry and business worldwide could not design economical solutions to efficiently recycle end-of-life off-the-road (OTR) tires. While OTR tires consist of high-quality natural rubber, one of the challenges in recycling them was transport. Huge size and weight of OTR tires do not allow transporting these tires easily and, as a result, these end-of-life tires used to be buried in quarries and on mining sites. Today, new technologies and innovations in engineering design give us hope that OTR tire recycling will soon become a common practice.

The Tyre Stewardship Australia will sponsor over 30 new research, market expansion and practical end use initiatives for recycled tires as more than $4.9 million have been committed by the organization’s fund. According to ABC News, an Albury business, Carbon MF Pty Ltd, and its director, Mark Fair, were fined nearly $600,000 by the Land and Environment Court for unlawfully accumulating 28,000 end-of-life tyres near Albury Airport. Court records revealed that Carbon MF accepted payment to receive around 22,000 4WD tyres, 45,000 car tyres, and 12,000 truck tyres but failed to comply with an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) clean-up notice. The EPA emphasized the fire hazard these stockpiled tyres posed, highlighting the potential risk to residents and air traffic. Carbon MF Pty Ltd, now in liquidation, faces consequences for environmental negligence.

Funds provided by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) will help at least six councils in South Australia commence trials using crumb rubber recycled from scrap tires for asphalt projects. The trials are considered the biggest of its kind in the country, according to TSA CEO Lina Goodman. The move to use recycled rubber is seen as an opportunity to advance circular economy in the state. Roads that rely on recycled tires will serve as alternative to conventional asphalt.

According to the Roads & Infrastructure Australia magazine, a collaborative project led by Alex Fraser, ecologiQ, and Entyr has resulted in an innovative alternative for asphalt production in Victorian roads. This initiative aims to address the significant issue of end-of-life tires in Australia, with approximately 70 percent of these tires now being recycled. Alex Fraser, a key player in this venture, developed TyrePave rCB (Recovered Carbon Black), a sustainable alternative to fine ground limestone in asphalt production.

The Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) led one of Australia’s largest multi-council projects, incorporating rubber from end-of-life tires into bitumen to enhance asphalt durability, performance, and sustainability. Conducted by RMIT University, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study, titled "Life Cycle Assessment and Potential Environmental Benefits of Crumb Rubber Asphalt using Field Data," revealed that recycled rubber extends pavement life, reduces raw material demand, and lowers environmental impacts.

Tire recycling initiatives conducted by tire producers in Australia require assistance of the state officials, Pirelli Tyres Australia said noting further that law on tire imports should also be adopted. Pirelli forms part of authoritative Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), however, the company’s managing director Pierre-Olivier Chevalier stressed that “the Australian government could do a bit more” to help tire recycling.
