Britain faces an environmental assault from the illegal disposal of end-of-life tyres as the impact of the Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping comes home to roost. With 75% of the UK’s waste tyres heading to the Indian subcontinent via the Red Sea route, the UK government rightly condemns Houthi attacks against commercial shipping, yet at the same time, it is failing to address the environmental concerns that arise from this situation, warns the Tyre Recovery Association.

The Tire Cologne, which ended on Thursday, 26 May 2022, confirmed its position as the leading international platform of the global tire and wheel industries with a strong course of the trade fair. Especially with a view to the current geopolitical situation, the trade fair convinced across the board with around 12,000 trade visitors from 100 countries. International Airlines Group (IAG) has invested in Wastefront, a leading tyre-to-fuel company, who plan to turn used tyres into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The SAF will be made by converting waste tyres into tyre derived oil, which is then refined into road fuels and SAF. The SAF produced is expected to give life cycle carbon emission savings over 80% versus fossil fuels.

In Kuwait, the Salmi tire stockpile is referred to as a constant source of fires and air pollution. As part of efforts to reduce and promote the end-of-life tire recycling in Kuwait, the Green Rubber Recycling company, which was established in 2013, creates a variety of products which utilize recycled tire rubber. Kuwait Times recently published an article about the Green Rubber Recycling highlighting company’s achievements. “Located in Amghara area, about 30 kilometers from Kuwait City, the tire recycling factory makes 100% recycled rubber tiling in brick or tile format for all types of locations including children’s play places, gyms, sports arenas as well as filling for gardens, farms and elsewhere,” the magazine writes.

Faced with millions of end-of-life tyres in landfill or openly dumped, the Gulf States are developing individual strategies to deal with the waste stream including a growing interest in pyrolysis… The meeting was kicked off by Committee Chairman Max Craipeau of Greencore Resources in China who wondered if “there’s ever been a better time” for tyre recycling. Investors were taking a much closer interest in the sector, especially because of the increasing concern from customers for greater sustainability. “Circularity is finally a reality for the tyre and rubber industry,” he said, referring to chemical recycling such as pyrolysis. “We have always been the poor relative in the recycling industry – because for a long time there was no circularity, as with metals which can be recycled infinitely. “Materials that weren’t necessarily sustainable from a chemical recycling point of view are becoming more and more sustainable thanks to growing demand.”

The CEOs of 10 leading tire manufacturers gathered to confirm a two-year Tire Industry Project (TIP) workplan focused on research and action for sustainability in the tire lifecycle, including tire-emission research and end-of-life tire management. TIP’s workplan for 2024 and 2025 builds on its established program of scientific research with enhanced action and stakeholder engagement across projects relevant to environmental, social and governance (ESG) in the tire sector.

Business Wire recently reported that Bolder Industries (“Bolder”), a pioneer in converting end-of-life tires into sustainable industrial products such as recovered carbon black (rCB), and Continental Carbon Company (“CCC”), a leader in the development and manufacture of furnace-grade carbon blacks for the tire and rubber industry, announced on November 17 that they have entered into a co-marketing agreement to commercialize breakthrough, sustainable products for the global rubber and plastics industry.
