Bridgestone and Michelin publish white paper to share the results of their work on the increased use of recovered carbon black in the tire industry. Following the joint call to action around recovered carbon black at the 2021 Smithers rCB conference, Bridgestone Corporation and Michelin Group have published a joint technical white paper to share the results of their work with stakeholders in the rCB community to develop a proposed global standard to increase the utilization of recovered carbon black material in tires. Wastefront AS – a Norwegian waste tire recycling company – in collaboration with leading Swedish chemical engineering company Hulteberg Chemistry & Engineering AB – announced that it has been awarded a €2 million grant from Eureka Eurostars, the world’s largest funding-program for business collaborations in creating innovative products for commercialisation, and the Norwegian Research Council and the Swedish Innovation Agency. The total project-funding amounts to €2.076 million: €1.038 million from Eurostars and €1.038 million from project partners.

Pyrum Innovations AG ("Pyrum"), a pioneer in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tires based on its patented pyrolysis technology, has received the first delivery of end-of-life bicycle tires by Ralf Bohle GmbH in connection with the planned cooperation of both companies. With its Schwalbe brand and a turnover of EUR 225 million (2020), Ralf Bohle GmbH ("Bohle") is Europe's market leader for bicycle tires and inner tubes. In September, Pyrum and Bohle had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the objective of which is the long-term operation, expansion and further development of a feedstock recycling system for end-of-life bicycle tires by means of pyrolysis. At the same time, the aim is to use the recovered carbon black (rCB) resulting from the recycling of end-of-life tires as an ecological secondary raw material in the production of new Schwalbe products.

Oil makes up approximately 35-45% of pyrolysis output depending on process conditions. Recovered fuel oil consists of three fractions with the middle fraction prevailing and it cannot be considered a substitute for traditional fuels before purification and sometimes additional treatment. Width of application of tire-derived pyrolysis oil depends on regulations in particular countries where a project is carried out. In countries with strict environmental protection regulations pyrolysis oil may require additional treatment and refinement, which in turn will increase production costs and lower profit margins.

Due to the global pandemic caused by the outbreak of Covid-19, the tire pyrolysis industry has diverse opinions about the fate of recovered carbon black (rCB) produced by pyrolysis plants. As rCB business largely depends on market dynamics of the virgin carbon black, one needs to analyze the carbon black industry to forecast rCB business opportunities. In this article, we would like to reassure our industry members engaged in pyrolysis and rCB production that despite disastrous impact of Covid-19, there are strong signs of recovery. Below, we cite articles recently published by the European Rubber Journal (ERJ), which give a great deal of hope to the industry.

The third scientific AZuR Colloquium took place on October 10, 2024, on the Jülich campus of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences (FH Aachen) with high participation. Forty scientists from various universities, institutes, and disciplines came together to discuss current research findings and projects related to the sustainable reuse and recycling of end-of-life tires. The agenda included workshops, discussion panels, and keynote presentations on topics such as the pyrolytic utilization of end-of-life tire granulate, the use of old rubber granulates in flood protection, and the future of recovered carbon black (rCB) as a sustainable filler.

Pioneering recyclers of rubber in Asia took centre stage at the BIR World Recycling Convention in Bangkok on 28 October. Their case studies highlighted the potential for valuable, closed loop solutions for the challenging material. The emphasis on adding value while delivering sustainability credentials increasingly sought by OEMs and brands came during the session for BIR’s Tyres and Rubber Committee.
