Salvador Pérez Lucena, president of the Spanish Association of Tire Recycling (AER) and Global Chief Sales Officer of Grupo Soledad’s Industrial Division, will speak at the 1st Annual Meeting of the Rubber Sector, organized by the National Chamber of the Rubber Industry (CNIH), on Monday, February 16, at the Club de Industriales in Polanco, Mexico City.

One of the first tire manufacturers in China to start recycling, reusing, and repurposing tires is ZC Rubber. In order to perform rubber recycling and reuse tires, the company created its Recycling Technology and Service Center in 2005, which marked the beginning of its tire recycling adventure. To forward their goals for tire recycling, ZC Rubber formally created Zhongce Recycling Technology Co., Ltd in 2009.

One of the milestones of the new year for AZuR is the establishment of a new, interdisciplinary project group. The fourth AZuR project group, initially consisting of 11 partners under the leadership of Martin von Wolfersdorff, aims to generate fresh ideas for the chemical recycling of used tires. Interdisciplinary AZuR project groups are intended to advance innovative recycling methods for used tires. Currently, there are already project groups focusing on retreading, material recycling of used tires, and rubberized asphalt. The composition of these groups, with partners from industry, trade, and academia, is chosen to incorporate as many relevant aspects and perspectives on a topic as possible.

German tire recycling organization AZuR reports that while car and truck tire are being produced, rainforests are being destroyed. Manufacturers require rubber, leading to the emergence of more natural rubber plantations at the expense of untouched forests. Although some alternatives exist, AZuR says, the tire industry remains entangled in opaque supply chains.

In 2024, SIGNUS managed a total of 222,406 tonnes of end-of-life tires (ELTs). Based on an average passenger tire weight of 8.1 kg, this equates to approximately 27,337,351 tires — enough to construct around 1,139 racetracks the size of the Jerez Circuit. Of the total volume collected, 12.5% was prepared for reuse as second-hand or retreaded tires. Nearly half (48.5%) was recycled into products for various applications, while the remaining 39% was used for energy recovery, mainly as a substitute for fossil fuels.

The German Rubber Industry Association (WDK) is urging European and national lawmakers to implement a harmonized and legally binding End-of-Waste (EoW) framework for used tires and recycled rubber materials. The call is part of a broader push to strengthen the circular economy in the tire and rubber sector, reduce regulatory uncertainty, and facilitate investment in recycling infrastructure.

Recently, SIGNUS – a Spanish end-of-life tire management authority – has published its Activity Report for the 2021 financial year, where the company highlighted that 200,286 tonnes of ELTs were converted into new useful products for different applications. Of the total collected, 11.4% was used to prepare it for reuse (second-use or retreaded tires), 36.4% was used for energy recovery and the remaining 52.3% was recycled at the different plants. of transformation existing in Spain, in products that were destined to different applications.
