On March 17, 2021, the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA)’s representatives met the EU’s Commissioner Thierry Breton and his team to present the vision and commitments of future tyre performance targets to deliver on Green Deal objectives. The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has welcomed and lauded a European Commission’s decision to lower the concentration limit of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in synthetic turf infill materials. The news came from the European Rubber Journal (ERJ) on July 26. The magazine writes that on July 20, the European Commission lowered the limit of PAHs in granules and mulches used as infill materials for synthetic turf or playgrounds from the current 100mg/kg to 20mg/kg.

The association reports that together with its end-of-life tyre (ELT) Forum ETRMA organised a Workshop to exchange ideas on the end of life tyres derived materials and the regulatory framework that could improve quality, market uptake as well as establish an internal market for such materials. To this end, ETRMA’s Advisor for End of Life Tyres Management Support, Mr Jose Maria Bermejo presented the proposal of the industry to overcome the current obstacles and promote the use of secondary raw materials from tyres, the association reports.

The European Commission’s renewed focus on industrial resilience must include a dedicated Rubber Strategy to ensure long-term supply stability and sustainability.

The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA), together with other associations representing the commodities under the scope of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), has signed a letter to the EU Commission lamenting that the EUDR information system is not yet on track to meet the requirements of properly functioning supply chains.
