Jaipur, India - The Tyre & Rubber Recycling Association of India (TRRAI) is proud to announce its second conclave, scheduled for August 24th at Ananta Spa and Resort, Jaipur. This prestigious event aims to bring together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to discuss the future of tyre recycling in India, focusing on sustainable practices and innovative solutions.

Two innovative tire projects were presented at the Tyre Recovery Association’s (TRA) annual Recycling Forum Day in Warwick, the UK, on the 18th of June which was attended by over 90 delegates, including representatives of the Environment Agency and Scottish Environment Agency. The event addressed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the current tire recovery program.

The new Extended Producer Responsibility for Waste Tyre Policy, released on July 23 by India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, has given the country's retreading industry a huge boost by recognizing retreaders as a necessary element of the waste tyre management system and by including retreading as an integral part of the Policy.

Tire Industry Project (TIP) and Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) of India with the support of Deloitte are organizing a one-day Workshop on “End-of-life Tire (ELT) Management in India” taking place on Thursday, 21st September 2023 at Hotel ITC Maurya in New Delhi. Franklin Raj, the pyrolysis business analyst, and Yogesh Gaikwad, technical consultant for carbon black, will participate in the event on behalf of Weibold’s team.

Today, tire recycling and cement industries are indeed intertwined. An abundance of scrap tires at specialized stockpiles, as well as well-organized tire collection systems and waste management plans, make it possible to (re)use precious rubber and create value out of waste. Tire-derived fuel (TDF) proves to be an alternative to fossil fuels used in cement production, mainly due to high calorific value of tire rubber and its low price. However, TDF emerged as a popular alternative to fossil fuels in cement production for yet another important reason – environment. Tire-derived fuel helps lower CO2 emissions and serves as a cleaner alternative compared to fossil fuels. Added to this, using scrap tires in cement production helps clean up vast scrap tire stockpiles, which otherwise pose threat to environment and which are often unsuitable as feedstock for tire recycling plants due to its exposure to radiation, sand or other contamination.

On February 21, 2020, South Africa’s Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries held consultation meetings dedicated to implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems for tire industry in South Africa. End-of-life tire accumulation have become quite an issue in the country, especially given that operations of the waste tire management authority, Redisa, were temporarily halted several years ago. The current report is written based on report by Dr. Ziboneni Godongwana, natural scientist working in the fields of solid waste management and recycling technologies, who personally attended the meeting.

Taking forward its commitment to sustainability, Indian tire manufacturer Apollo Tyres has partnered with Tyromer Inc, a leader in non-chemical devulcanization of end-of-life tires. Tyromer Inc, through their Indian associate, Tyromer India LLP, is committed to supplying recycled rubber material, produced using its environmentally sustainable processes, to Apollo Tyres. Announcing the partnership with Tyromer, P K Mohamed, Chief Advisor, R&D, Apollo Tyres Ltd, said “This partnership with Tyromer is a step towards achieving our sustainability goals, and it also enables us to honour our Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

Environmental and social awareness is becoming the key element of the sustainable tire industry. End-of-life tires (ELTs) are one of the most abundant as well as the most attractive waste from an economic point of view. More than 30 million tons ELTs are generated worldwide annually (WBCSD, 2019) and this waste stream is growing dynamically.

According to Bnamericas platform, Chile recently enacted the extended producer responsibility (EPR) law, which compels the mining industry to take responsibility for recycling 25% of their end-of-life tires (ELTs) and storing at least 50% of them, either directly or through a third party. This regulation applies to producers, importers, sellers, and waste managers, as ELTs from mining trucks pose a significant environmental concern. Unlike car tires that weigh around 9kg each, conventional truck tires weigh approximately 38kg, and mining truck tires can be as heavy as 4,000kg.
