British government commences consultations aimed at overhauling the waste system via reducing plastic contamination; the step encouraging recycling is expected to bring the island nation closer to circular economy. The consultations are likely to result in a more widely-used Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) not only for such waste as plastics, but for scrap tires as well.

Two innovative tire projects were presented at the Tyre Recovery Association’s (TRA) annual Recycling Forum Day in Warwick, the UK, on the 18th of June which was attended by over 90 delegates, including representatives of the Environment Agency and Scottish Environment Agency. The event addressed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the current tire recovery program.

The new Extended Producer Responsibility for Waste Tyre Policy, released on July 23 by India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, has given the country's retreading industry a huge boost by recognizing retreaders as a necessary element of the waste tyre management system and by including retreading as an integral part of the Policy.

Tire Industry Project (TIP) and Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) of India with the support of Deloitte are organizing a one-day Workshop on “End-of-life Tire (ELT) Management in India” taking place on Thursday, 21st September 2023 at Hotel ITC Maurya in New Delhi. Today, tire recycling and cement industries are indeed intertwined. An abundance of scrap tires at specialized stockpiles, as well as well-organized tire collection systems and waste management plans, make it possible to (re)use precious rubber and create value out of waste. Tire-derived fuel (TDF) proves to be an alternative to fossil fuels used in cement production, mainly due to high calorific value of tire rubber and its low price. However, TDF emerged as a popular alternative to fossil fuels in cement production for yet another important reason – environment. Tire-derived fuel helps lower CO2 emissions and serves as a cleaner alternative compared to fossil fuels. Added to this, using scrap tires in cement production helps clean up vast scrap tire stockpiles, which otherwise pose threat to environment and which are often unsuitable as feedstock for tire recycling plants due to its exposure to radiation, sand or other contamination.

On February 21, 2020, South Africa’s Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries held consultation meetings dedicated to implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems for tire industry in South Africa. End-of-life tire accumulation have become quite an issue in the country, especially given that operations of the waste tire management authority, Redisa, were temporarily halted several years ago. Environmental and social awareness is becoming the key element of the sustainable tire industry. End-of-life tires (ELTs) are one of the most abundant as well as the most attractive waste from an economic point of view. More than 30 million tons ELTs are generated worldwide annually (WBCSD, 2019) and this waste stream is growing dynamically.
