According to its latest press release, Ecolomondo Corporation – a Canadian cleantech company specializing in the commercialization of its Thermal Decomposition Process (TDP) proprietary recycling technology and building and operating turnkey TDP facilities globally – announced that it has secured an offtake agreement for up to 80% of its Recovered Carbon Black (rCB) production from the Company’s Hawkesbury TDP facility.

On November 22, Michelin and Bridgestone publicly announced their collaboration on developing the recovered carbon black at the Smithers rCB Conference in Amsterdam. Following the announcement, some work has been done by the companies to reach the circular goals set at the conference. In April 2022, Bridgestone and Michelin issued a position paper on increasing the use of recovered carbon black in tires to achieve a more sustainable mobility ecosystem. German end-of-life tire pyrolysis operator Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) has started series delivery of recovered carbon black (rCB) to Ralf Bohle GmbH, manufacturer of German bicycle tire brand Schwalbe. According to Pyrum, the delivery will close the loop “completely” for Schwalbe, which collects end-of-life tires through its recently launched recycling system and supplies them to Pyrum for further processing.

Pyrolysis is an age old concept, whereas pyrolysis from end-of-life tires (ELTs) is a nascent field in an immature market. Today, in the ever present push towards a circular economy, this technology receives ever more attention in the tire recycling community – investments in tire pyrolysis businesses increase, technology keeps advancing and ever more operators appear on the market worldwide.

Bolder Industries increased investment in technical expertise, physical lab space, and its leadership team based on the success of its pilot programs. The Bolder Industries’ plant in Maryville, Missouri, fully commercialized the solution, accepting end-of-life tires at the gate and extracting steel, BolderBlack® (Bolder Industries' recovered carbon black brand), gas, and petrochemicals with a 98% recovery rate and a net-positive energy facility. The company reports that the net effect is a ~90% reduction of environmental impact across the board when considering greenhouse gas emissions, electricity, and water usage, and at a lower price. The company’s press release in May 2020 said Bolder Industries' patent-pending manufacturing process offered all of the petroleum-based products inside of a tire another life, revealing re-use savings.

Tire producer Continental A.G will start applying recovered carbon black (rCB) obtained via tire pyrolysis method and produced by German Pyrolyx A.G. after two companies have reached a five-year deal. According to the contract, Pyrolyx will be supplying some 10,000 metric tons of rCB annually to Continental’s facilities in numerous countries. This will help Pyrolyx to increase its sales and grow in North America and eastern Europe as additional plants will be commissioned as part of the agreement.

Smithers is launching the first Recovered Carbon Black (rCB) Conference in Asia, scheduled for September 24-25, 2024, in Qingdao, China, and available online. Building on its European success, the conference aims to foster important business conversations on rCB in Asia, in line with China's carbon neutrality ambitions and worldwide sustainability initiatives. According to the Roads & Infrastructure Australia magazine, a collaborative project led by Alex Fraser, ecologiQ, and Entyr has resulted in an innovative alternative for asphalt production in Victorian roads. This initiative aims to address the significant issue of end-of-life tires in Australia, with approximately 70 percent of these tires now being recycled. Alex Fraser, a key player in this venture, developed TyrePave rCB (Recovered Carbon Black), a sustainable alternative to fine ground limestone in asphalt production.
