The Dow Jones Sustainability World Indexes' (DJSI) Automobiles and Components sector now includes Pirelli, Nokian Tyres, and Hankook Tire Corp. The DJSI Europe Index also featured Pirelli and Nokian. Against a sector average of 36 points, Pirelli scored a total of 85 points. According to the firm, Nokian Tyres outperformed the industry standard in 20 of the 21 evaluation criteria for the worldwide Auto Components sector in 2019. Hankook Tire claimed it earned favorable assessments in the areas of materiality, supply chain management, corporate citizenship and charity, and was also commended for its ongoing efforts to increase its sustainability.

Sailun Group's Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Rubber and Tire and Honorary Chairman, Yuan Zhongxue, announced the company’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) during the 2024 China Rubber Conference on March 27th. By 2030, Sailun aims to increase the sustainable materials used in tire production to 40% and to achieve 100% by 2050. Additionally, the goal is to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by 30% per tire by 2030 compared to 2022 levels.

Bridgestone EMEA has once again received the Platinum rating by renowned sustainability assessment platform, EcoVadis. This is the third consecutive time the organisation has been awarded EcoVadis’ top ranking since 2021, putting Bridgestone EMEA in the top 1 percent of the 130,000 companies assessed by EcoVadis globally across 220 industry sectors. Bridgestone EMEA was given a Silver rating and ranked in the top 12 percent of businesses globally when first assessed by EcoVadis in 2015 – which scores organisations against four core areas: Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement.

On April 28, 2021, EFG Polymers – a manufacturer of engineered elastomers from the United States – announced that it became completely sustainable. EFG Polymers, a resource recovery company, announces today that it has achieved over 100% sustainability by re-engineering rubber waste and producing new valuable elastomers with no emissions, waste, or by-products. Reusing thermoset rubber waste and returning the resources to new rubber products reduces the collective dependence on virgin resources and can assist the vital rubber industry in improving its sustainability. When end-of-life tires reach the end of their life cycle, they become hazardous for the environment and human health if they are dumped in landfills. Made of synthetic rubber, chemicals, and additives, these tires contaminate water and land, pose a high risk of fire, generate harmful gases when burned, and serve as breeding grounds for insect-borne epidemics. These concerns are particularly relevant in Mexico, where an estimated 32 million tires are discarded annually, equivalent to one tire per second. Unfortunately, only 12% of these tires are recycled, with the majority ending up in landfills.

Pirelli introduces a distinctive logo identifying tires containing over 50% bio-based and recycled materials. Applied to the P Zero E line, boasting over 55% sustainable materials, the logo emphasizes Pirelli's environmental commitment. Third-party verification of eco-compatible materials will be standard for all future products featuring the logo. Pirelli aims for 60% bio-based and 12% recycled materials in selected lines by 2030.

The Yokohama Rubber Co. announced that it will supply ADVAN racing tires with a sustainable material content as the control tire for the Japanese Super Formula Championship from the 2023 season. The company has completed development of tires for use in dry conditions and will continue developing tires for wet conditions with the aim of supplying them from 2023. The dry condition tires being supplied by Yokohama Rubber use natural rubber and various naturally derived compounding agents including oil produced from oil palm nuts and orange peels, as well as recycled iron, rubber recycled from waste tires, and synthetic rubber produced using the mass balance method – a method that allows you to label a commercial product as a biomass-derived product based on the volume of biomass-derived raw materials used during the process of turning raw materials into final products and the distribution process.

Liberty Tire Recycling recently published its ESG Report. Liberty says its ESG Zero Waste Goal requires digging deep to uncover every opportunity to increase circularity within our business model and the recycling industry.

Olivia Collier and Maslin Mellick, 2022 master of architecture graduates from the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) in Denver, found inspiration for their senior capstone project in in the local tire landfill, called "Tire Mountain". Their project, which involved creating a "Clean-Tech Manufacturing Facility for Sustainable Building Products," was awarded the Colorado Green Building Guild (CGBG) Student Project of the Year. Although they initially researched nature's byproducts and society's waste to develop sustainable building materials, they ultimately focused on tires, resulting in their innovative invention and design. Both Collier and Mellick wanted to work on a project that would have a meaningful impact on their area. They decided to focus on landfills and found inspiration in the trash at Colorado Tire Recycling (CTR).
