Adele Rose, the Tyrewise’s Implementation Project manager, and the team at Tyrewise are only months away from seeing the roll-out of a nationwide product stewardship scheme for end-of-life tyres (ELTs) and they are already planning how to tackle entire cars. A four-month systems and process trial of Tyrewise was completed at the end of December from Hawke’s Bay and the programme governed by Auto Stewardship New Zealand (ASNZ) is expected to be officially launched in the end of 2023. The Tyrewise team is working hard with a number of businesses in the North Island on the systems and software trial. Rose says the trial was mainly focused on capturing data through software that tracks ELTs from their collection point all the way through to processing.

Gradeall International – a renowned manufacturer of tyre bailing and end-of-life tyre recycling equipment from Northern Ireland – introduced a new machine in its tyre recycling range, the Car Sidewall Cutter. The new cutter is specifically designed to downsize passenger car tyres to prepare them for shredding as well as other recycling processes. The manufacturer says that the Car Tyre Sidewall Cutter builds upon the Gradeall team’s experience gathered from the Sidewall Cutter, another and bigger machine for efficient and cost-effective cutting of tyre sidewalls for larger tyres. The Car Tyre Sidewall Cutter is a smaller machine designed specifically for dealing with end-of-life car and passenger vehicle tyres.

With just under one month to go until Tire Technology Expo 2024 gets underway, the shortlisted nominations for this year’s Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence have been presented. The awards will take place during a drinks and canapes party at Tire Technology Expo on Tuesday March 19 at the Messe Hannover. Scandinavian Enviro Systems – a Swedish tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer and operator – informs about the large demand for recovered pyrolysis oil foreseen by the company’s feasibility study. According to Enviro, there are favorable opportunities to establish a commercially successful pyrolysis plant based on Enviro’s technology in the UK. This was the conclusion of a feasibility study that commenced in November 2020 and has now been completed. According to the study, the favorable conditions stem primarily from the large domestic demand for recovered oil for the production of renewable vehicle fuel.

As the problem of waste tyre accumulation and disposal around the world gets acute, Robert shared his view on how to sustainably tackle the problem.

Renowned Danish manufacturer of tire recycling equipment, ELDAN Recycling A/S, presented test set-up for pre-cut mining tire recycling. The shredder plant or the c-plant as it is called in-house, consisting of an ELDAN Super Chopper and an ELDAN Multi Purpose Rasper with a feeding silo in front to ensure a continuous flow. The plant was tested with pre-cut mining truck tyres, one of the toughest materials to shred.

Bridgestone – a global leader in tires and sustainable mobility solutions – is planning to help reduce the carbon footprint of its commercial vehicle line of tires by producing radio-tagged tires in 2024. Tires on vehicles like trucks and buses will be linked to a cloud-based system that is designed to help clients maximize the tires’ lifespan and minimize their carbon footprints. By the end of 2022, Bridgestone intends to begin expanding its plant in Warren County, Tennessee. As part of this renovation, it will install production equipment capable of embedding tires with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.

On March 14 2023, Reoil Sp. z o.o. – a company recycling end-of-life tires using continuous pyrolysis process, announced it had signed an LOI with Japan’s Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd – a global tire manufacturer headquartered in Japan – for the commercialization of recovered carbon black (rCB). Through this agreement, the two companies will jointly develop products allowing Reoil’s recovered carbon black to partially replace virgin carbon blacks that produced from fossil fuels. About Reoil Reoil was one of the world’s pioneers in developing a successful continuous pyrolysis technology, which it implemented in its first end-of-life tire recycling plant in Bukowno (Małopolskie, Poland) yet in 2015.

Carlton Forest Group – a tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer and operator from the UK – reports that its pyrolysis and recycling engineer, that has dedicated his entire career to managing waste streams around the world, has won a UK Lifetime Achievement Award. Rory Hughes, Technical Director at our IRR Waste 2 Energy, part of Carlton Forest Group, scooped the award at the UK Business Tech Awards as the virtual ceremony on 25th November drew to a conclusion.
