Last week, David Spear FAICD FAIM – the Chairman of Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) – met with Large Format Retail Association (LFRA) Members from across Australia to discuss the role of product stewardship, and how LFRA members can learn and be part of the sustainable management of end-of-life tires.

In its press release from September 21, TSA stresses the organization was established in 2014 to implement the national Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (Scheme) which aims to promote the development of viable markets for end-of-life tires. The Scheme has multiple benefits including transforming a waste product into a useful commodity, creating new industries and employment opportunities while also reducing the environmental harm caused by the illegal dumping, stockpiling and mismanagement of end-of-life tires.

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) – the end-of-life tire management authority designing programs and regulations for tire recycling and material recovery in the country – is inviting innovators to help improve the recovery of large off-the-road (OTR) tires once they reach end of life. Around 120,000 tons of end-of-life OTR tires are sent to landfill every year. These tires are used in some of Australia’s most important industries: mining, agriculture, construction, manufacturing and aviation. At end of life, less than 15% of these tires are recovered and then recycled for use as a new resource, the remainder are stockpiled, buried onsite or sent to landfill.

Conveyor belts, a common waste product in Australia, are targeted for transformative recycling efforts by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA). According to TSA’s recent report, the company seeks to revolutionize the disposal practices of the bulk handling industry, which often sends used conveyor belts to landfill due to challenges in recycling these materials. With approximately 60,000 to 85,000 tons of conveyor belts generated annually, less than 1% are currently recycled, primarily due to their complex composition and handling difficulties.

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) welcomes the recent changes to the CO2 emission factor for end-of-life (EOL) tyres in the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme, taking effect 1 July 2022. Of the 460,000 tonnes of EOL tyres generated annually in Australia, if 100,000 tonnes were used to replace coal in fuel burning applications, this would represent a potential carbon dioxide reduction of 87,000 tonnes and would make a substantial contribution to Australia’s greenhouse gas abatement programme.
