Annually, New Zealand generates 5 million scrap tires and the biggest part of them end up at landfills or as waste export. To solve the problem, a company Eneform has developed a low emissions system that has the recycling capacity of 1.5 million scrap tires per year. Currently, the firm seeks expansion within the country and wants to upgrade its recycling capacity up to 5 million tires per annum. To develop its new system, Eneform relied on traditional pyrolisys and transformed it so the company could run a cost-efficient tire recycling plant. Southern Cross Engineering, Petrotec and Hineuru Holdings helped Eneform develop the innovative tire recycling facility.

End-of-life tire recyclers and retreading companies will be able to compete in several nominations next year as part of the 2022 Recircle Awards that praise sustainable businesses, recycled tire rubber products and management teams in the tire recycling sector. The winners will be announced on April 25.

In April 2023, RPRA’s Registrar communicated that an inspection of the used tires collection systems found Tire Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) to be noncompliant with aspects of the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016 (RRCEA) and certain requirements outlined in Part III (Collection of tires) of the Tires Regulation related to the number of sites required and the operational requirements for collection sites.

In December 2022, the Government of Ontario filed amendments to the Tires Regulation under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016. Tire and Rubber Association of Canada welcomes these amendments that will bring great benefit to Ontarians through the reduction of red tape for business and industry, creating a more efficient tire recycling system. The new regulatory amendments refine requirements for tire recycling promotion and education, supply data reporting, and management performance audits for the industry. Other changes include updating the producer responsibility hierarchy to require more businesses participate in tire recycling, expanding on-demand used tire collection services across the province, increasing the range of resource recovery activities so more used tires can be recycled, and more. Tyromer – a Canadian tire devulcanization company – announced that its recycled rubber material, produced via its environmentally sustainable, non-chemical extruder devulcanization of end-of-life tire rubber, is now used by Continental Tires. This is the result of a multi-year collaboration driven by the shared commitment of the two companies to circular economy in which end-of-life tire rubber is reused in the production of new tires. Tire-to-Tire recycling represents in many cases the most direct and energy efficient way to reuse what is still largely considered and treated as a waste.

Novum Energy Australia managing director Rowan Kendall said the company’s target was to process 19,000 tons of rubber per annum. This would produce approximately nine million liters of fuel oil, 4500 ton of recycled carbon black, 2500 tons of waste steel and excess syngas for electricity generation. According to Kendall, this was an effective way to ensure used tires were being reclaimed in a safe and sustainable manner.

Fulton Hogan Australia – a large infrastructure construction, roadworks and aggregate supplier company in Australasia and New Zealand – has recently been certified as a Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) Circular Economy Collaborator (Manufacturer). This is a Federal Government Accredited certification which recognises Fulton Hogan for playing a role in utilising Australian generated tire derived materials, contributing to a sustainable society.

According to the latest press release by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA), each year the equivalent of over 58 million passenger tires reach their end-of-life in Australia. TSA says that throughout the life cycle of these tires, it is important to consider the environmental and health impacts, including tire and road wear particles that may be generated while driving tires on the roads, and from tire-derived materials when tires are recovered at the end of their life.
