SIGNUS Ecovalor – a Spanish end-of-life tire managaement authority – reports that the American tire manufacturer, Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe Ltd, joins the organization with the aim of guaranteeing the correct environmental management of the tires they put on the market, when those are at the end of their useful life.

Bridgestone suggest using rubber granulate to produce dredged clay that has sealing and filling properties, thus boosting cement’s durability and reducing absorptivity. Bridgestone has conducted trials of rubberized clay finding that clay modified with rubber granulate could be used for structures under deformation as cracks formed exclusively around the rubber, therefore they could “prevent the growth of wide cracks”, according the Bridgestone’s manager.

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has concluded a new deal with the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) that will study and test the application of rubber from waste tires in the asphalt. The study is partly sponsored by TSA. Other investors are the Victorian Department of Transport and an independent national transport research organisation, ARRB.

Italian startup Rubber Conversion specialized in tire rubber devulcanization took late last month the most prestigious prize at the Keynes Sraffa Award at Church House Conference Centre in Westminster, London. The prize was awarded to the business’s developer and brand manager Cveta Majtanovic who is a double-degree PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Trento. Rubber Conversion is the Italian business that relies on its patented rubber devulcanisation system handling rubber waste. The authoritative bodies have dubbed this technology the most innovative solution to scrap tire rubber materials reuse by means of devulcanization. Rubber Conversion operates as a spin-off from Innovando Srl, a waste managing company that handles more than 60,000 tons of waste each year.

Spainish tire recycling authority Signus is reducing tire recycling fee by 3,55 percent since January this year – the decision was made during the budget approval by the Board of Directors for the new financial year. Therefore, the fee for a passenger vehicle tire will become € 1.24 instead of € 1.28, and the recycling fee for a truck tire changes to € 9,20 from € 9,57.

Researchers from Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology, in collaboration with international partners, have developed an innovative method to convert recovered carbon black (rCB)—a by-product of pyrolysis of end-of-life tires (ELTs)—into reduced graphene oxide (rGO). This sustainable approach offers a cost-effective alternative to conventional graphene production while supporting circular economy principles.

TNU (Tratamiento Neumáticos Usados) – a Spanish EPR agency for end-of-life tires – reports it will be present in the new edition of Ecofira with its traveling exhibition on tire recycling “Recicla y Sonríe" ("Recycle and Smile"). The exhibition addresses the social, economic and environmental importance of the treatment and recycling of end-of-life tires. Used tires collected annually by TNU are claimed to 100% recycled. When recycled, the components of end-of-life tires: rubber, steel and textile fiber, become materials and energy resources.

Using electronic identification chips in new tires has been found to be an efficient practice that tire producers can undertake. The verdict about its technical feasibility was delivered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, the group also noted that the technology has to be standardized, and this means, the industry will have to elaborate on it, as well as new regulations will be required.
