South Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute have launched a national research and development program to convert waste clothing and used tires into higher-quality recycled raw materials. The program will invest KRW73 billion from 2026 through 2030, including KRW25 billion for technologies addressing waste clothing and KRW48 billion for technologies focused on waste tires. For the tire recycling sector, the initiative will support pretreatment of waste tires before pyrolysis to recover higher-quality recycled carbon black and develop tire manufacturing technologies capable of using more than 15% recycled carbon black in new tires. The ministry said the program is intended to strengthen circular resource systems, support commercialization of recycled materials and help Korean manufacturers respond to overseas environmental regulations, including the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation.

This month, our three webinars will cover not only introductory topics, but also will help established pyrolysis companies focused on recovered carbon black, who already operate on the market and would like to strengthen its business positions. Special topic: Recovered carbon black markets (April 22, 2020) One of the webinars hosted by Weibold will be devoted to recovered carbon black (rCB) markets, where Weibold’s special guest, Martin von Wolfersdorff, will be the speaker. Martin von Wolfersdorff is a world-class expert in pyrolysis and recovered carbon black as well as marketing of specialty chemical materials. He is deeply involved in the industry, serves one of the organizers of the first global conference on recovered carbon black and has been supporting multinational companies in the tire pyrolysis sector, the tire industry, tire trade organizations, rubber and the plastics industries.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems has announced that shareholders approved a new financing authorization at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on May 21, 2026, while the company also confirmed details of its upcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 23 in Gothenburg.

The International Organization for Standardization (2008, 2013) defines chemical recycling as a production of new raw materials by changing the chemical structure of polymers (e.g., plastic, rubber) through depolymerization, excluding energy recovery and incineration. Whereby depolymerisation is understood as a reversion of a polymer to its monomer(s) or to a polymer of lower relative molecular mass. This irreversible chemical decomposition (depolymerization) in pyrolysis processes is caused solely by a rise in temperature in an inert or oxygen free environment (UIPAC, 2021).

Stratton Kirton of Liberty Tire Recycling said the US tire recycling sector was originally focused on dismantling large tire piles that had accumulated across the country. According to the article, after more than 50 million tires remained in stockpiles as recently as 1990, much of the industry’s work shifted toward processing end-of-life tires and finding uses for recycled rubber. Liberty Tire Recycling has since grown into one of the most prominent companies in the sector, with the article stating that it was founded in 2000 and now has more than 50 million tires from around 15,000 retail locations across North America reaching the company’s recycling network each year.

By passing the Green Deal in 2019, the European Union (EU) set the course for more sustainable investments, for example in areas like renewable energy, biodiversity, or circular economy. The goal is to reach a climate-neutral economy in the EU by 2050, with a reduction goal of 55% by in 2030. To achieve these climate goals, the Green Deal includes an investment plan of 1 trillion euros over the next 10 years. Despite this huge investment, the EU depends also on the support of the private sector to achieve the Paris climate agreement.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems – a Swedish tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer and operator – informs about the large demand for recovered pyrolysis oil foreseen by the company’s feasibility study. According to Enviro, there are favorable opportunities to establish a commercially successful pyrolysis plant based on Enviro’s technology in the UK. This was the conclusion of a feasibility study that commenced in November 2020 and has now been completed. According to the study, the favorable conditions stem primarily from the large domestic demand for recovered oil for the production of renewable vehicle fuel.
