Tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) has landed at the intersection of two big policy drives: circularity for end-of-life tires (ELTs) and the EU’s push to scale recycled carbon fuels under RED III. Chemistry is attractive — a liquid fuel from a widespread waste stream — but the arithmetic is brutal. Combustion emissions alone push TPO very close to conventional diesel on a life-cycle basis, meaning TPO alone cannot meet RED III’s 70% GHG reduction requirement without using credits tied to the tires’ alternative fate. Properly applied e_ex-use (diversion) credits are therefore decisive: they can turn TPO from a near-miss into a qualifying recycled carbon fuel — but only if the baseline is robustly documented and upstream emissions are tightly controlled.

The Renewable Transport Fuel Association of the UK (RTFA) reports that its thirteen members and Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) of the UK have built a collaboration to promote greater uptake of pyrolysis, an advanced chemical recycling technology. To achieve this, they are funding a consultancy to contribute to the Environment Agency’s review of recovery options for end-of-life tires. Specifically, the group is seeking to demonstrate that pyrolysis is a sufficiently thorough and environmentally-safe process, and that the products should be classified as resources, not waste.

LD Carbon, a Seoul-based producer of recovered carbon black (rCB), has closed a $28 million Series C funding round led by Toyota's growth fund, Woven Capital, with participation by Meritz Securities, Investwith, Industrial Bank of Korea, Hyundai Motor Group Zer01ne, Elohim Partners and New Main Capital. LD Carbon will use the investment to scale operations to recycle end-of-life tires and materials from end-of-life vehicles into rCB and tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) through pyrolysis, which can be used to create new automotive parts and tires. The company says the investment will advance its mission of accelerating the circular economy while delivering material cost and carbon savings to global customers.

On September 5, Vow ASA announced that its subsidiary Scanship AS has signed a FEED (Front End Engineering Design) contract with Murfitts Industries, a leading end-of-life tire recycling company. This contract represents the latest milestone in a collaborative program between the two companies focused on developing a process to recover and reuse raw materials from end-of-life tires on a commercial scale. One of the primary goals of this initiative is to allow manufacturers to incorporate recovered materials into new tire production, thereby closing the loop in the tire lifecycle.

Tire pyrolysis is a complex capital-intensive business which requires much know-how and which is rather challenging to successfully run today. However, we are convinced tire pyrolysis has a bright future ahead. First, let’s consider reasons which make this business challenging. In the OECD countries, tire pyrolysis is hampered mainly by national regulations. For instance, in Germany, fuels obtained from recycled rubber are banned for use in vehicular engines.

Bridgestone EMEA (Bridgestone), Grupo BB&G (BB&G) and Versalis (Eni) announced the signing of an agreement aimed at establishing a closed-loop ecosystem to transform end-of-life tyres into new tyres. This March, BASF revealed its plans to use pyrolysis oil from recycled tires to manufacture outdoor pants. The new product line of the outdoor apparel company VAUDE which will be available in stores from March 2022, does not only stands out due to its timeless design, robust material and simple reparability – the pants are also sustainable, as chemically recycled endof-life tires are used as a raw material. With this innovation, BASF and VAUDE seek to make a contribution towards reducing waste and preserving valuable resources.
