A recent study by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), in collaboration with Sydney Trains, Transport for NSW, EcoFlex, and Bridgestone, has validated a novel railway shock absorption system made from recycled tyres. The technology, tested over two years on a live freight line in Chullora, Sydney, has demonstrated its ability to reduce track degradation and maintenance needs.

Annually, New Zealand generates 5 million scrap tires and the biggest part of them end up at landfills or as waste export. To solve the problem, a company Eneform has developed a low emissions system that has the recycling capacity of 1.5 million scrap tires per year. Currently, the firm seeks expansion within the country and wants to upgrade its recycling capacity up to 5 million tires per annum. To develop its new system, Eneform relied on traditional pyrolisys and transformed it so the company could run a cost-efficient tire recycling plant. Southern Cross Engineering, Petrotec and Hineuru Holdings helped Eneform develop the innovative tire recycling facility.

End-of-life tire recyclers and retreading companies will be able to compete in several nominations next year as part of the 2022 Recircle Awards that praise sustainable businesses, recycled tire rubber products and management teams in the tire recycling sector. The winners will be announced on April 25.

Ecolomondo Environmental, a subsidiary of Quebec-based Ecolomondo Corporation has secured an amount of CAD 32.1 million in project financing from Export Development Canada (EDC) to build a new, first of its kind turnkey tire pyrolysis facility that will be located on Tessier Street in the Town of Hawkesbury, Ontario. Ecolomondo expects to achieve financial close by the end of March 2019, with proceeds of the financing to be used for engineering, construction and commissioning of the company’s new tire pyrolysis turnkey facility.

According to Bnamericas platform, Chile recently enacted the extended producer responsibility (EPR) law, which compels the mining industry to take responsibility for recycling 25% of their end-of-life tires (ELTs) and storing at least 50% of them, either directly or through a third party. This regulation applies to producers, importers, sellers, and waste managers, as ELTs from mining trucks pose a significant environmental concern. Unlike car tires that weigh around 9kg each, conventional truck tires weigh approximately 38kg, and mining truck tires can be as heavy as 4,000kg.

The European Tyre Recycling Association (ETRA) is holding a webinar “Horizon ETRA” on June 4 (16:00 – 18:00), which will explain the main changes introduced in the updated version of the Horizon 2020 Work Programme. ETRA says this will help participate to the last calls of this year as well as an introduction to the next Horizon Europe program. The Webinar will also give a description of the Life Program in view of the next call. ETRA says it is collaborating with NCP Brussels and hub-Brussels on a number of activities including a program of webinars and workshops on EU funded programs and other opportunities for SMEs. ETRA is collaborating with ANCI Lazio on the Life Porgramme and Circular Economy.

In April 2023, RPRA’s Registrar communicated that an inspection of the used tires collection systems found Tire Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) to be noncompliant with aspects of the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016 (RRCEA) and certain requirements outlined in Part III (Collection of tires) of the Tires Regulation related to the number of sites required and the operational requirements for collection sites.
