Tyre Stewardship Australia recently reported that efforts of its team, combined with a huge work done by the University of Melbourne and PorousLane, now enables to turn end-of-life tires into new flood-free and permeable pavements suitable for lightly trafficked urban surfaces such as footpaths, bike paths, tree protection zones, driveways, residential and commercial developments and parking lots. Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) – the end-of-life tyre management authority in Australia reports that its 2019/20 Annual Report is now available for download. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is proposing to grant authorisation for the Tyre Product Stewardship scheme to continue for a further 3 years. The Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) implemented scheme aims to increase the number of tyres being recycled and the use of tyre derived products in environmentally appropriate ways in Australia and overseas.

TSA says its mission remains unchanged: to support to the best of its ability the sustainable growth and profitability of local recycling through important initiatives such as Market Development Fund and ground-breaking initiatives such as the Foreign End Market Verification program. TSA's team says they are heartened by the organization's achievements, including over $8 million committed to market development projects and a continued focus on increasing recovery rates in the off-the-road tyre sector.

Equine Air, a product developed after Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) teamed up with Flexiroc, was used for a trial on 550 square meters of Pakenham Racing Club Tynong race track in 2018. The findings of the experiment with the trail were positive, and the riders admitted the benefits of the new surfacing. To manufacture the product, developers used more than 3,000 tires – this equals 27 tons of recycled rubber. It has an innovative design enabling the product to be used for difficult ground conditions. Moreover, it helps the surface to drain quickly following rain.

Now that Australia’s first crumb rubber bitumen blending plant opened, more end-of-life tires will be used to manufacture useful value-added products, like durable rubberized asphalt, rubberized bitumen blends, rubber coatings, etc. Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) reports that world-leading equipment specifically designed for blending crumbed rubber and bitumen has been installed and commissioned for the first time in Australia by construction giant Fulton Hogan in partnership with Tyre Stewardship Australia.

Logan City Council in Queensland, Australia, reports that is has teamed with Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) to conduct trials of a new eco-friendly road surface. According to Logan City Council, the surface is a combination of recycled end-of-life tyres and reclaimed asphalt. Installation of the new surface on Lagoon Road, Carbrook is scheduled for this April. TSA has committed $150,000 to the trial and additional laboratory testing, which aims to prove that the new surface will be as good as, or better than, standard road sealing. Logan City Council Director of Road Water Infrastructure Daryl Ross pinpoints Council is always looking at innovative ways to deliver better roads.

Tyre Stewardship Australia – the renowned for its success end-of-life tyre recycling authority in Australia – launched a demonstration project aimed at increasing the use of recycled crumb rubber on local roads across Tasmania is helping pave the way to a more sustainable future. The authority reports that more than 1240 end-of-life truck tyres will be diverted from landfill and mixed with the equivalent of 40,000 recycled glass bottles to produce crumb rubber asphalt in the ground-breaking project – a first for Tasmania – in a partnership between local road specialist Fulton Hogan and Tyre Stewardship Australia.
