A Hungarian city of Zalaegerszeg in the Zala region saw the construction of a new rubber bitumen plant capable of recycling 20,000 tons of scrap tires annually; the facility became operative this year. The company behind the plant construction is the local energy and chemical company MOL. Moreover, the development is possible thanks to a huge investment allocated by MOL; at the same time, the State Enterprise Investment Support Program also provided partial funding to the initiative. In total, the sum of investment is estimated at 3 billion Hungarian Forint.

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has found in its recent study that Australia annually deals with over 55 million waste tires, with 30 percent of the amount being heavy truck and mining tires. One of sustainable methods to extend life of the precious material is recycling after which rubber can be used in municipal paving projects. Some of the country’s roads are already composed of asphalt mixes and rubber powder spray-seals that contain recycled rubber; their usage is being promoted by the TSA and the industry. In addition, TSA helps create rubberized permeable pavements, which result in promotion of more advanced methods to manage complex water systems in urban areas.

Fulton Hogan Australia – a large infrastructure construction, roadworks and aggregate supplier company in Australasia and New Zealand – has recently been certified as a Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) Circular Economy Collaborator (Manufacturer). This is a Federal Government Accredited certification which recognises Fulton Hogan for playing a role in utilising Australian generated tire derived materials, contributing to a sustainable society.

Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet reports that this June it awarded over $480,000 in grants to six counties for application of rubber-modified asphalt to roadways and $500,000 in grants – for projects that use rubber mulch from end-of-life tires. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), Alabama State Parks, and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) were awarded the Leadership in Conservation and Sustainability Award on Sept. 12, 2024, by the Rubberized Asphalt Foundation. The award recognizes their efforts to use recycled tires in paving projects at three state parks—Lake Guntersville, DeSoto, and Joe Wheeler—repurposing over 19,000 end-of-life tires.

Australian state of Victoria is now testing an innovative sustainable drainage technology for rubberized concrete called Equine Air after it was installed last summer at Pakenham Racecourse as a replacement to conventional road base. Equine Air is considered to be capable of improving track drainage and can be used even during bad weather. Moreover, when it is used in horse racing fields, it is said to be able to reduce the animals’ injuries when they fall thanks to special cushioned foundation.
