Kentucky reported a statewide waste tire recycling rate of 77.4% for fiscal year 2025, slightly below the 78.2% reported in 2024 and close to the most recent US national average cited in the state’s Waste Tire Program Annual Report. The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet said residents generated an estimated 59,100 tons of waste tires in 2025, equivalent to about 4.2 million passenger tire equivalents. The Commonwealth and county governments managed about 15.1% of that total, while the private sector accounted for the remaining 84.9%. The report highlights the continuing role of the Waste Tire Trust Fund in collection events, county grants, crumb rubber and tire-derived product grants, rubber modified asphalt projects and market development, while also warning that tire-derived fuel markets face pressure from reduced solid fuel use, low-cost natural gas and broader changes in manufacturing and energy markets.

The UK Environment Agency (EA) has recently published a detailed internal review on the export of end-of-life tires (ELTs). The report highlights significant regulatory shortcomings, raising questions about the environmental and legal soundness of current practices. Since India receives the majority of UK tire exports, the review carries substantial implications for trade flows, compliance requirements, and the structure of the ELT recovery market.

In order to promote the sustainable development of road engineering, this study used waste tire rubber powder (RP) and surface organic layered double hydroxide (SOM-LDHs) to modify 70# matrix asphalt. The Box–Behnken design response surface method with three factors (rubber powder content, surface organic layered double hydroxide content, shear temperature) and three responses (penetration, ductility, softening point) was used to optimize the preparation parameters. The optimum formula was determined to be 21.7% rubber powder content, 4.8% surface organic layered double hydroxide content, and 160 °C shear temperature.

The European Union’s REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006) has long set the benchmark for chemicals legislation worldwide. Since entering into force in 2007, REACH has reshaped how industries produce, import, and use chemical substances. Its philosophy is straightforward but demanding: “no data, no market.” Companies must generate safety data and register any substance manufactured or imported in quantities of one ton or more per year. While waste itself is exempt, once a waste-derived product—such as pyrolysis oil, recovered carbon black (rCB), or syngas—achieves end-of-waste status, it is treated as a chemical substance and falls within REACH obligations.

This article should give an overview over the recent development trends regarding the options for an upgrade of the tire-derived oil (TDO) with chemical and physical techniques. In two previous articles we have already dealt with the production of limonene and highlighted the advantages of fractional distillation of TDO. Introduction Refiners around the world are looking for alternatives to producing fuels from petrochemicals only. This is due to expected future declines in crude oil reserves combined with significant fuel demand growth expectations throughout the world and increasing environmental awareness among the population.

Just in February 2023, the Joint Research Council (JRC) of the European Commission [1] published their study results on the environmental and economic factors of chemical recycling (pyrolysis) and energy recovery of end-of-life tires (ELT). The result of this study in advance: chemical recycling via ELT pyrolysis - including mechanical recycling for feedstock processing - is a more sustainable option for managing ELTs than energy recovery via incineration. Revisiting a decades-old knowledge Already in 2010, a much-cited Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) found pyrolysis to be the most eco-effective ELT treatment technology, followed by dynamic devulcanization and ambient grinding. [2] These results were confirmed in 2015 by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study showing that substituting primary resources with pyrolysis products from ELTs provides significant environmental savings. [3]

End-of-life tires represent a significant global waste problem. Their robust structural and chemical properties pose challenges for traditional recycling methods. With 1.5 billion tires manufactured annually, the environmental impact is substantial, with each tire contributing approximately 300 kg of CO2 emissions. The increase in tire production, driven by the rise of electric vehicles, underscores the urgency for effective recycling strategies. Waste tires are not only difficult to dispose of but also pose environmental hazards when dumped or incinerated. Traditional disposal methods like open dumping and incineration lead to issues such as fire hazards, mosquito breeding grounds, and the release of harmful pollutants.
