Wastefront AS has been granted an environmental permit for their flagship site at the Port of Sunderland. The decision was made Thursday 31 August 2023 by the Environment Agency and clears the way for the next stage in the process, as Wastefront works toward having the site fully operational by 2026. Commenting on the news, Wastefront CEO Vianney Vales said: “Wastefront’s work is timely and urgent; our Blueprint will solve the disposal of an estimated 31 million metric tonnes of end-of-life tires annually, which is currently a concerningly dense source of both emissions and waste.

The draft notification for regulations for the extended producer responsibility (EPR) for tires has been shared by the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. This move could have a huge impact on many countries that are the largest exporters of waste tires to India.

bp has signed an eight-year offtake agreement with Circtec, a UK-based technology company that develops and operates innovative pyrolysis chemical process technology and whose plants convert hard-to-recycle waste tyres into HUPATM - Circtec’s proprietary renewable drop-in marine fuel, and circular naphtha petrochemical feedstock. Under the agreement bp is committed to purchasing up to 60,000 tonnes per year of HUPATM renewable drop-in marine fuel and up to 15,000 tonnes per year of circular naphtha petrochemical feedstock, on a take-or-pay basis, from Circtec’s new commercial-scale plant, for eight years after the new plant is commissioned.

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) reports in its press release it won the MATERIALICA Design + Technology Award 2022 together with BASF SE, Mercedes-Benz AG and WITTE Automotive GmbH. The jury honoured the four companies with the Best of Award in the Material category for the innovative new door handles of the Mercedes S-Class and the EQE, in the production of which fossil raw materials are replaced by biomethane and pyrolysis oil from recycled end-of-life tyres (ELT). Together, this closes the cycle of recyclable materials and actively promotes the development of innovative recycling processes, Pyrum says.

In late December 2020, Swedish tire pyrolysis operator and equipment manufacturer Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) reported about updates to its long-term collaboration agreement with Michelin. According to the press release, as part of the strategic partnership negotiations, Enviro and the French global tire manufacturer Michelin have agreed on the principle terms for establishing the first jointly owned recycling plant and a license agreement regulating the terms of use for Enviro’s tire recycling (pyrolysis) technology as well as subsequent compensation. The agreement is subject to the approval of Enviro’s owners at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) and the closing will be done after the EGM. An online magazine “The Better India” reports about an entrepreneur based in Pune, India, who turned her cash prize from ‘Startup India’ into a footwear brand Nemital that uses recycled end-of-life tire rubber. “I was in my last semester to complete post-graduation in renewable energy from The Energy and Research Institute (TERI) and started hunting for a job in the renewable energy sector,” Pooja Apte, the 28-year-old entrepreneur, recalls for The Better India. “During the process, I learned there are not many people working in the field of upcycling textile and plastic. I decided to work on tires and started experimenting,” she says.
