As the U.S. administration begins implementation of the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), USTMA is urging congressional leadership to continue working on tire policy and related transportation sustainability initiatives. While the IIJA includes several provisions that would advance scrap tire markets and improve the resiliency of the nation’s infrastructure, USTMA has identified six specific policy proposals – ranging from tax incentives to additional research dollars and procurement commitments – that will strengthen the American tire manufacturing industry and help the country develop roadways with the future in mind.

The Alliance of Future Tires (AZuR) is continuing to drive cooperation in the field of end-of-life tire recycling. Since 2020, the AZuR network has been working to make tire disposal more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. For ten months, the network was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and since June 2021, it has been self-funded under the auspices of the WDK. There are currently 43 diversified partners in the network.

Pyrum Innovations, a pioneer in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tyres (ELT) based on its patented pyrolysis technology, is deepening its collaboration with ELDAN Recycling A/S, one of the world's leading manufacturers of recycling machines, including shredders for ELT. Under the agreement, both companies will include each other's systems in their sales processes and actively distribute them.

Wastefront AS – a Norwegian waste tire recycling company – was given permission to press ahead with plans to construct the ‘UK’s greenest tire recycling plant’ at Port of Sunderland. Construction on the development is expected to begin this year (2022), with company executives confident that the plant will be in commercial operation by 2024, creating around 100 skilled jobs once in full operation.

In the company’s recent press release, it was announced Nokian reached yet another milestone, as it introduces its most sustainable tire yet. The Nokian Tyres Green Step concept tire is a masterpiece of sustainable innovation with its ambitious design consisting of 93% of the materials either recycled or renewable. It moves the company even closer to its goal: by the year 2030, 50% of all raw materials used in Nokian Tyres’ tires will be recycled or renewable
