Vianney Vales, CEO of Wastefront AS, a Norwegian company building a Waste-to-Fuel business in Sunderland, highlights the significance of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in an interview with The Northern Echo. The UK Government’s plan for 10 percent of all jet fuel to be SAF by 2030 is a major boost for the region’s green economy. The SAF mandate, set to become law in January 2025, faces challenges due to insufficient feedstock and high demand. Currently, global SAF supply is at two million metric tons, while demand is growing at 45 percent annually, with commitments from over 40 airlines.

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has received an order for deliveries of 500 tons of recovered pyrolysis oil from a leading European oil player. The oil, which will be produced at Enviro’s facility in Åsensbruk, will be delivered during the fall of 2024. The customer is a leading company within the petrochemical supply chain and has previously received smaller deliveries of tire pyrolysis oil from Enviro. Deliveries linked to the new order will start in August 2024 and continue until year-end. The tire pyrolysis oil will be delivered from Enviro’s plant in Åsensbruk, which has been in operation since 2013.

Government procurement and stronger product stewardship are essential to creating hundreds of local jobs by processing and using the 500,000 tons (equivalent to 62.5 million passenger tires) of used tires generated annually in Australia. Speaking at the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Procurement Practices, Tire Stewardship Australia’s CEO, Lina Goodman, emphasized the need for government to leverage its procurement power and product stewardship regulation to drive the investment needed for circular economy jobs, boosting Australia’s manufacturing sector and stimulating markets for recycled products.
