Engineering News publication reports that TRIASA’s (The Tyre Recycling Industry Association of South Africa) launch is a significant event for the South African economy and environment, according to Dr Mehran Zarrebini, CEO of Mathe Group, a truck tire recycling operation based in Hammarsdale and a founder member of the new industry body.

TRIASA has been launched with the aim to unite the different elements of tire recycling in South Africa and to provide a forum for discussion, knowledge exchange and collaboration on pressing issues within the industry.

The launch of TRIASA is at a critical time for the local economy and the environment as the country has an ever-growing stockpile of waste tires.

The Integrated Waste Tyre Plan can help whittle away the waste tires and also create entrepreneurial and manufacturing opportunities and employment. TRIASA's primary objectives include promoting a circular economy, reducing South Africa's dependency on imported rubber, and encouraging green public procurement.

Additionally, the organization aims to stimulate the use of recycled content in new products so as to replace imported rubber, and support research in tire recycling. All members of TRIASA must prove that they are processing waste tire material, be registered with the Waste Bureau, and have supply agreements in place.

Waste tire statistics in South Africa are difficult to come by, and it is necessary to conduct a national audit on waste tires in South Africa. Updated industry data suggest that 206 272 tons of waste tires were generated in 2021.
