Yokohama Rubber joins international research project on sustainable rubber seeds
Yokohama Rubber has partnered with an international initiative titled "Utilization Technology of Rubber Seeds for Green Products to Mitigate Global Warming and Plastic Pollution." This groundbreaking project aims to leverage natural rubber seeds to address environmental challenges and improve economic conditions for agricultural workers.
Research collaboration focused on sustainability Bringing together experts from Japan and Thailand—home to the world’s largest natural rubber industry—the project is spearheaded by Associate Professor Shinji Kanehashi of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. It explores sustainable uses for Para rubber tree seeds, which are often discarded. The research seeks to mitigate global warming and reduce plastic pollution while addressing economic disparities faced by rubber farmers.
Yokohama Rubber’s contributions Prior to joining the project, Yokohama Rubber conducted surveys of natural rubber plantations through its subsidiary, Y.T. Rubber Co., Ltd. (YTRC). In 2024, the company strengthened its commitment to sustainability by working to create an efficient collection system for rubber seeds and developing new revenue opportunities for farmers. Yokohama’s efforts include supporting improved working conditions in the rubber industry.
Aligning with sustainability goals Yokohama Rubber’s participation aligns with its corporate sustainability slogan, “Caring for the Future.” The company continues to integrate environmental and social initiatives into its business activities, aiming to make a significant contribution to the global fight against climate change and economic inequality.
