SUMO Innovations – a European company specialized in chemical modification of rubber powder for industrial applications – forecasts record-high sales for the end of 2019. According to the company’s recent statement, SUMO Innovations has replaced more than 1000 tons of SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) in polymer-modified-bitumen roofing membranes in Europe. SUMO says that this allowed roofing membrane manufacturers to significantly reduce raw material costs and further demonstrate their commitment to environment-friendly products and green production processes. SUMO can replace 25% of SBS in membranes keeping same performance. The company pinpoints that, in parallel with benefits such as cost reduction and quality enhancement, SUMO products help manufacturers significantly cut CO2 emissions.

Nokian Tyres held a sustainable tyre innovation challenge called FAST RACE, BIG CHANGE to discover new solutions for more environmentally friendly tyres. The competition received almost 50 entries from 18 countries, and four finalists were chosen by Nokian Tyres' experts. After the world's fastest pitch and careful consideration, the jury awarded Reselo AB from Sweden with the winning place. Italian startup Rubber Conversion specialized in tire rubber devulcanization took late last month the most prestigious prize at the Keynes Sraffa Award at Church House Conference Centre in Westminster, London. The prize was awarded to the business’s developer and brand manager Cveta Majtanovic who is a double-degree PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Trento. Rubber Conversion is the Italian business that relies on its patented rubber devulcanisation system handling rubber waste. The authoritative bodies have dubbed this technology the most innovative solution to scrap tire rubber materials reuse by means of devulcanization. Rubber Conversion operates as a spin-off from Innovando Srl, a waste managing company that handles more than 60,000 tons of waste each year.

The French sports retail company Decathlon together with its innovation partners Rubberlink and Tintex, initiated two of these pilot projects, which consist of prototype footwear made from recycled end-of-life tires. The innovators at Rubberlink created a solution of devulcanized tire rubber that allowed Decathlon Portugal to produce a prototype shoe with a 100 per cent recycled rubber sole. According to data from Genan, in comparison with the use of virgin raw materials to produce similar products, for each ton of tire that is recycled, less than 700 kg of carbon emissions are produced.
