Since 1985, Clemson University has hosted an annual Global Tire Industry Conference. Originally organized by School of Textiles professors, the conference has now grown to accommodate an international audience of tire industry professionals. The three-day conference this year kicked off at the Clemson University Center for Corporate Learning in downtown Greenville, featuring several distinguished speakers and presenters. Among them was Dean Wendy York, who spoke about the intersection of business, the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business, and the tire industry.

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) has received RCS sustainability certification for its pyrolysis oil, setting another milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainable textile production. This makes Pyrum one of the first companies to have its oil certified according to this standard. The certification ensures that the oil meets all the necessary sustainability criteria required by Pyrum’s customer BASF for the production of its product "Ultramid® Ccyled®", a polyamide for textile applications. Pyrum’s certified pyrolysis oil is fed into the production process by BASF and allocated to Ultramid® Ccycled® using the mass balance approach. The mass balance process and RCS certification also ensure transparent traceability in the supply chain.

Circular Rubber Technologies – a Vancouver-based company specializing in converting rubber from industrial end-of-life tires into a reclaim material that serves as a substitute for virgin rubber – is set to launch the first demonstration plant for an innovative tire-recycling process in Red Deer later this year. With a focus on reusing rubber indefinitely, the facility is expected to revolutionize tire manufacturing. Spearheaded by chief innovations officer Shauna LeBlond, the $16-million project has garnered significant attention, earning nominations for the prestigious Alberta Emerald Award and other ecological honors.

On March 28, Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) published its trading update for Q4 2023 and preliminary figures for the full year 2023. According to the company's press release, sales increased by 17% year-on-year to EUR 1,147 thousand (2022: EUR 982 thousand). Pyrum is currently focusing on improving the throughput of the agglomeration plant for further processing the recovered carbon black (rCB) and the new tyre shredding plant. The aim is to achieve greater sales increases in the future.

Levidian – a British climate tech business whose patented technology cracks methane into hydrogen and carbon, locking the carbon into high-quality green graphene – has unveiled its first prototype truck tire, combining net zero graphene with carbon black in a new tread formulation that could unlock a future of greener, higher performance tires.

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) has laid the foundation for its market entry in Scandinavia. Consulting agreement was signed between GreenTech Recycling Tires AB and Pyrum Innovations AG for the construction of a joint pyrolysis plant in Sweden. It is planned that Pyrum will participate in the SPV with up to EUR 3 million, provided that GreenTech’s financing has been fully secured. The company is currently conducting talks in this regard. At the same time, GreenTech Recycling Tires AB has already reserved a suitable site in Billingsfors, Sweden, held talks with tire suppliers and, with Pyrum’s support, will soon begin compiling the necessary approval documents. The official start of the project in the form of the commencement of work on the basic engineering is scheduled for the beginning of July this year. Both partners are aiming to build a plant with a recycling capacity of 20,000 tonnes of end-of-life tires per year. Production is scheduled to start in 2027.
