SIGNUS – the Spanish end-of-life tire management authority – registered for the first time with the Spanish Office of Climate Change the Carbon Footprint generated by its activities in 2017. It became the first extended producer responsibility collective system to do so in a verified and certified manner by AENOR. The Carbon Footprint Registry is voluntary and collects the efforts of Spanish companies, administrations, and other organizations in calculating, reducing, and offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions generated by their activities.

India has taken a significant step towards implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for waste tires with the introduction of draft regulations under the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016. The guidelines aim to streamline operations for producers and recyclers in compliance with the new EPR regime. The Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) and the All India Rubber & Tyre Recyclers Association (AIRTRA), the two major players in the Indian tire industry, have been in preliminary discussions to establish a reverse collection mechanism and recycle end-of-life tires in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the EPR Policy introduced by the Indian government. “Concerning the Extended Producer Responsibility introduced by the Ministry of Environment & Forest for Scrap tyres in India, the two principal stakeholders, ATMA & AIRTRA, met recently to understand the recycling segment to develop a smooth implementation. Producers committed to facilitating a reverse collection mechanism and recycling of end-of-life, post-consumer waste,” stated Chetan Joshi. President, AIRTRA.

According to a recent study, recycling used tires has less of an impact on the environment than using new materials to make the same items. In order to fulfill producer obligations under the Tire Regulation 225/18 and the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act (RRCEA) of Ontario, producers must receive services that help them reach the regulatory goal of collecting and recycling 100 percent of the used tires they sell into the market. This involves delivering them to processing facilities and confirming how they are transformed into new products for authorized usage as Tire Derived Products on the market (TDP). A TDP replaces the more traditional method of producing goods by using fresh, or "raw," resources. People anticipate that recycled tire products will be more environmentally friendly than the new materials they replace. The goal of the Scrap Tire Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a study in which seven members of the Canadian Association of Tire Recycling Agencies voluntarily participated, was to quantify this expectation (CATRA). The study involved gathering and analyzing data from participating tire recycling companies utilizing information from 2017 to 2020.

Taking forward its commitment to sustainability, Indian tire manufacturer Apollo Tyres has partnered with Tyromer Inc, a leader in non-chemical devulcanization of end-of-life tires. Tyromer Inc, through their Indian associate, Tyromer India LLP, is committed to supplying recycled rubber material, produced using its environmentally sustainable processes, to Apollo Tyres. The new Extended Producer Responsibility for Waste Tyre Policy, released on July 23 by India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, has given the country's retreading industry a huge boost by recognizing retreaders as a necessary element of the waste tyre management system and by including retreading as an integral part of the Policy.
