After announcing the capability to demonstrate a 70% sustainable-material tire in January 2022, Goodyear, – one of the world's largest tire companies – working with its supply base, plans to sell a tire with up to 70% sustainable-material content in 2023. On January 4, Goodyear unveiled a demonstration tire comprised of 90% sustainable materials. This demonstration tire has passed all applicable regulatory testing as well as Goodyear’s internal testing. This demonstration tire also tested to have lower rolling resistance when compared to the reference tire, made with traditional materials. Lower rolling resistance means this demonstration tire has the potential to offer better fuel savings and carbon footprint reduction.

Continental’s ContiRe.Tex tire was chosen as the GALAP Product of the Year 2023 in the Tire category after competing against 38 other candidates. On Wednesday, December 14, the Award was presented at the Torre Glries in Barcelona. The use of recycled materials in tire manufacture was pioneered by ContiRe.Tex technology, which achieved an 8.2 out of 10 rating from a sample of about 100,000 users. With its ContiRe.Tex technology, which aims to make the manufacturing, use, and recyclability of its tires more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, Continental just got one step closer to the goal of tires made from 100% recycled or sustainable materials. ContiRe.Tex utilizes between 9 to 15 polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles per tire, depending on the tire size.

The Continental Carbon Company (CCC) – a leader in the development and manufacture of furnace-grade carbon blacks for the tire and rubber industry – will shut down its Phenix City Carbon Black plant on December 31st following years of failing to make necessary improvements to the facility and being hit by a multimillion dollar judgement verdict. The company was under a federal consent decree to make mandatory improvements to the facility and it is currently operating under a permit from ADEM.

Pyrum Innovations AG ("Pyrum"), a pioneer in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tyres (ELT) based on its patented pyrolysis technology, has further expanded its cooperation network. In a pilot project with the BMW Group, Pyrum has recently began recycling the used tyres of the BMW Group branch in Saarland. The pilot project was preceded by an audit in which topics such as occupational safety and fire protection, permits and environmental requirements were examined. Continental and Security Matters (SMX), an innovative tech platform specializing in digital tracking using unalterable chemical-based barcodes, have succeeded for the first time in verifying beyond doubt a marker substance for natural rubber in a tire, and thus throughout the entire production process. The dedicated marker technology, which both companies optimized for use in natural rubber, is designed to create greater transparency along the entire value chain of tires and technical rubber products from Continental. Provided with special security features, the use of the marker substances enables the invisible marking of natural rubber with information on its geographical origin.

German end-of-life tire pyrolysis operator Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) has started series delivery of recovered carbon black (rCB) to Ralf Bohle GmbH, manufacturer of German bicycle tire brand Schwalbe. According to Pyrum, the delivery will close the loop “completely” for Schwalbe, which collects end-of-life tires through its recently launched recycling system and supplies them to Pyrum for further processing.

Bandvulc, the UK's renowned commercial retreader and now a part of the Continental Tire Group, has been recognised at this year’s Western Morning News Business Awards after being selected as a finalist for the Environmental and Sustainability Award. A finalist’s trophy was presented to the team during an exclusive awards ceremony in Exeter, which recognises innovative businesses from across Devon and Cornwall. To be in with a chance of winning the Environmental and Sustainability Award, judges sought out companies that were working to achieve an environmentally conscious operation. The businesses also needed to demonstrate that it had steps in place to reduce carbon emissions, implement sustainable working and maximise energy efficiency.

Continental – a premium tire manufacturer – builds basketball court from recycled Extreme E tires. According to the company’s latest report, Continental donates 400 square meters of paving stones for youth basketball court in Hanover-Linden. "Turning racing tires into living space" - under this motto, a new basketball court is being built in Hanover to give children from the surrounding area a lively place to play, run and train. Continental is providing the necessary rubber paving stones as a donation. The paving stones are made from recycled racing tires from the Extreme E electric racing series, which Continental has been supporting as a founding partner since 2019.

Tyromer – a Canadian tire devulcanization company – announced that its recycled rubber material, produced via its environmentally sustainable, non-chemical extruder devulcanization of end-of-life tire rubber, is now used by Continental Tires. This is the result of a multi-year collaboration driven by the shared commitment of the two companies to circular economy in which end-of-life tire rubber is reused in the production of new tires. Tire-to-Tire recycling represents in many cases the most direct and energy efficient way to reuse what is still largely considered and treated as a waste.
