India-based Social Action and Environment Group (SAPE) that has been campaigning for prohibition of hazardous types of tire recycling in the Asian state received support from the British Tyre Recovery Association (TRA). The campaigning efforts come at a time when scrap tire export, especially in India, has greatly increased severely damaging processing capacity in the UK and other countries. In addition, the recycling conducted in India is not always subject to the local environmental regulations, according to SAPE’s claims.

Every year, India receives some 300,000 tons of waste tires from countries like Australia, where tires are either recycled, or disposed of. Nevertheless, these processes are not always safe and environment-friendly. The National Green Tribunal of India (NGT) has filed a plea accusing India of failing to come up with efficient scrap tires management solutions – this is alarming as the state is a producer of some 6 percent of total global tire waste. After the move, the tribunal has turned to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) with a request to present a plan that would address the problem of scrap tires control.

This summer, England started trials of the new rubberized asphalt developed from a mix that includes recycled tires. The asphalt mix is produced by a British company Tarmac. According to Tarmac, a new road surface using recycled tires is on trial on the M1 motorway by Highways England. If successful, it is hoped that this new method will take a huge step towards tackling the millions of end-of-life tires piling up every year.

Australian Tyre Recyclers Association (ATRA) reports about the decision of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) to ban the exports of various waste products, including scrap tires. COAG has introduced a timetable to make the ban effective; the initiative was supported and welcomed by ATRA. “There are two distinct streams of used tyre exports, one is sustainable, the other clearly is not and a timetable to ban the export of whole baled tyres from Australia is welcomed”, said Robert Kelman, Executive Officer at ATRA.

There is a potential risk that application of <5mm crumb rubber infill in artificial sports surfaces like synthetic turf will be banned due to an ongoing probe by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). This claim was reinforced by CEO at the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA). The potential ban may negatively impact tire recycling’s commercial segment given that significant amount of crumb rubber recovered from old tires is used to produce sport surfaces and rubber infill.

The 17th China International Tire Expo is inviting guests to participate in the events set 19-21 August at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre. According to the organizers, more than 360 exhibitors will show their products at the venue. It is anticipated that over 120,000 attendees will visit the expo and will get a chance to find out more about merchandise and services. In January, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) presented a proposal seeking the restraint of the microplastics applications; the presented document relies on the Chemicals Agency’s studies of the threats that the added microplastics pose to environment and human health. All businesses, including tire recyclers, that are affected by the new proposal on microplastics of European Chemicals Agency, are welcome to reach the ECHA, as the organization will launch public consultation that will last until September 20. Meanwhile, ECHA called on the enterprises to make early submissions to facilitate the process.

The Foundation of Environmental Management, the company in charge of an anti-dumping initiative in Russia, announced that the Russian Federation has commenced a plan aiming to liquidate illegal dumps of automobile tires in the country. Nokian Tyres serves as an organizer of the plan that seeks to get rid of pollution that illegally dumped tires create. To remove the biggest unsanctioned tire dump, Nokian Eco Challenge will assist the operators of the project.
