Gradeall International – a renowned manufacturer of tyre bailing and end-of-life tyre recycling equipment from Northern Ireland – introduced a new machine in its tyre recycling range, the Car Sidewall Cutter. The new cutter is specifically designed to downsize passenger car tyres to prepare them for shredding as well as other recycling processes. The manufacturer says that the Car Tyre Sidewall Cutter builds upon the Gradeall team’s experience gathered from the Sidewall Cutter, another and bigger machine for efficient and cost-effective cutting of tyre sidewalls for larger tyres. The Car Tyre Sidewall Cutter is a smaller machine designed specifically for dealing with end-of-life car and passenger vehicle tyres.

ECO Green Equipment – one of the world’s leaders in end-of-life tire shredding equipment helps Missouri-based trucking company convert old truck tires into rubber mulch. ECO Green’s recent press release reports that Prime Inc., a Missouri-based trucking company, had been devoted to retreading their used tires. The company discovered that 20% of end-of-life tires couldn’t be retreaded, and those tires — all 100,000 per year — were ending its lifecycle at landfills. With the help of ECO Green Equipment, they’re improving the environment by creating environment-friendly valued-added products and making money while doing it.

Despite hard efforts of the tire recycling and pyrolysis industry to develop new markets and increase recycling rates, recycled rubber based product markets demonstrate only moderate growth. To tackle the problem and allow thousands of tons of precious materials go back to consumer goods, numerous end-of-life tire management organizations, companies and research labs do their best to find new markets and develop innovative products out of scrap tire rubber.

According to expert opinion in the tire recycling industry, BlackCycle – the research project coordinated by Michelin – can revolutionize end-of-life tire recycling worldwide. This opinion was voiced by experts during a meeting of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) at its Tires & Rubber Committee on October 15, 2020. There was tangible excitement at the BIR Tyres & Rubber Committee webinar on October 15 following a guest presentation on the recycling of end-of-life tires (ELTs) into secondary raw materials for tires and other product applications.

Aliapur – French end-of-life tire management authority – is getting ready to launch its call for tender for the transportation of tires to tire processing units and tire recycling sites. This market for 300 regular routes concerns a volume of 400,000 tons of tires per year over two years. In addition to the call for tender for the renewal of the 4-year contracts for service providers in the end-of-life tire collection and transformation markets, on October 19 2020, Aliapur will launch another call for tender for the end-of-life tire transportation service. The service covers bulk transport of all the flows transported, first to transformation sites (for shredding or pre-processing), and then to tire recycling plants.

CM informs that the demand for tire-derived fuel (TDF) is significantly increasing thanks to its advantages over traditional fuels, such as providing higher heating value than coal or wood. The heat produced from TDF is approximately thirty percent higher than that of coal and more than twice that of wood. TDF also provides lower sulfur oxide emissions when compared with coal, which has a higher sulfur content. Furthermore, combustion of TDF provides better operational consistency than other fuels used in waste-to-energy systems.

New Zealand’s North Canterbury has a huge end-of-life tire stockpile, which has been attracting public attention over the last years and grew into a big problem. Efforts to clean up the stockpile have picked up pace with two parties who are now in a competition race. Press reports that the tire stockpile has been a concern for the community for more than four years, and it was deliberately set alight in 2018. Both removal bids have Environment Canterbury (ECan) backing. New Zealand’s magazine Stuff reports that “Community-led group Accountability Action was formed in response to a lack of action by authorities and enforcement breaches by the companies responsible for the tires, Tyre Recycling Services New Zealand Ltd and 2016 Tyre Shredding Ltd.”

For many years, tire recycling industry and business worldwide could not design economical solutions to efficiently recycle end-of-life off-the-road (OTR) tires. While OTR tires consist of high-quality natural rubber, one of the challenges in recycling them was transport. Huge size and weight of OTR tires do not allow transporting these tires easily and, as a result, these end-of-life tires used to be buried in quarries and on mining sites. Today, new technologies and innovations in engineering design give us hope that OTR tire recycling will soon become a common practice.

Logan City Council in Queensland, Australia, reports that is has teamed with Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) to conduct trials of a new eco-friendly road surface. According to Logan City Council, the surface is a combination of recycled end-of-life tyres and reclaimed asphalt. Installation of the new surface on Lagoon Road, Carbrook is scheduled for this April. TSA has committed $150,000 to the trial and additional laboratory testing, which aims to prove that the new surface will be as good as, or better than, standard road sealing. Logan City Council Director of Road Water Infrastructure Daryl Ross pinpoints Council is always looking at innovative ways to deliver better roads.
