The UK’s Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) has issued an urgent call to action to the British government, warning that the country’s domestic tyre recycling industry is under severe threat due to inaction on outdated regulations and the continued export of end-of-life tyres (ELTs) to countries like India.

The European Commission has confirmed that 24 non-OECD countries have successfully submitted their requests to continue receiving EU recycled materials under the new Waste Shipment Regulation (WSR). While this is a positive step, nearly 150 non-OECD countries have yet to submit their notifications, risking an automatic export ban by May 21, 2027.

Group CNJ, headquartered in Ahmedabad, India, is investing $3.5 million in a new tire recycling facility in Melbourne, Australia, as part of its global expansion strategy. The new site will be equipped with Fornnax Technology’s advanced shredding equipment, including the SR 150 primary shredder and R4000 secondary shredder, enabling the facility to process 10 tonnes of tires per hour, with an annual capacity of 55,000 tonnes. The plant is expected to be operational by March 2025 and will produce high-quality steel-free rubber chips.

In response to an inquiry from Tyre and Rubber Recycling, DeFRA provided an update on their plans for waste tyre management. The department confirmed that the Labour government intends to reform the waste exemptions system, including the removal of the T8 exemption. This initiative aligns with the new Secretary of State's goal of developing a roadmap toward a zero-waste economy, which aims to enhance resource efficiency and cut down on emissions and waste.

The recycling market has been rocked by the European Commission’s decision to ban crumb rubber infill from use in synthetic turf surfaces at the end of an eight-year transition period. Therefore, the focus has shifted to alternative opportunities, with tyre pyrolysis attracting plenty of headlines, investment and imaginative thinking. Given the huge strides forward taken in this field over recent years, it will again form one of the main topics for debate at the upcoming BIR Tyres & Rubber Committee meeting to take place in Copenhagen on Tuesday May 28.
