Indian Tyre Technical Advisory Committee (ITTAC), the technical organization representing the Indian Tyre Industry, and Automobile Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) have taken the initiative to organize a day long “invite-only” Conference on Circular Economy on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Hotel Le Meridien, Janpath, New Delhi. All concerned stakeholders in the eco-system of Tyre Industry, which are integral part of the Circular Economy, viz. senior Government officials & Policy makers, representatives from the Tyre Industry, material recovery, reclaim, retreading and allied sectors have been invited to participate in the Conference and contribute in the deliberations.

According to the company’s chairman, tire retreading sector creates huge amounts of tire waste and this material is one of the firm’s dominant products for exports as it can be successfully recycled to produce crumb rubber infill for sport fields, tire-derived oil, molded products for flooring, insulation panels and even shoe soles.

Ecore International – a converter of reclaimed tire rubber in North America – has announced the acquisition of 360 Tire Recycling Group, a tire recycling management company. This strategic partnership enhances Ecore's position in the collecting of tires and buffings while assisting in the sourcing of raw materials for the business's cutting-edge flooring and surfacing solutions. Additionally, it positions Ecore and 360 Tire Recycling Group as pioneers in the global transition to a circular rubber economy. “360 Tire’s commitment to providing an environmentally responsible, one-stop recycling effort for its customers aligns perfectly with Ecore’s vision of a planet free of rubber waste,” said Art Dodge, CEO of Ecore.

SLTC – The Latin American Society of Rubber Technology (The Sociedad Latinoamericana de Tecnología del Caucho) – recently proudly announced the launch of their new Recycling Committee. SLTC highlighted its organizational scheme and general objectives, which we describe below. According to the SLTC, the Recycling Committee was born out of the need to find a place where all stakeholders related to tire recycling in Latin America can actively interact to enrich and develop the industry.

According to Estonian source ERR News, Swedish waste disposal company Ragn-Sells AS intends to establish a tire-shredding plant, likely in Lääne-Viru County, to recycle end-of-life rubber into oils for Enefit Power plants. This move aims to alleviate a major tire dump near Tartu. Pyrolysis process is used to transform end-of-life tires into a usable raw material. Tire importers meanwhile have set up a new producer responsibility organization, which would collect end-of-life tires due to be shredded, as they say they are not satisfied with the Rehviringlus, the organization currently tasked with recycling tires.

The German AZuR (Allianz Zukunft Reifen – “German Tyre Future”) – an organization engaging in the design of end-of-life tire management practices – has initiated a study on end-of-life tires in the country. From retreading to tire pyrolysis, the research by AZuR will examine at different components of end-of-life tire value chain, including tire collection and recycling. The goal is to discover the actual facts pertaining to the reality of waste tire management.

UK’s Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) says it endorses the move by the Australian government to prohibit the export of most unprocessed end-of-life tires from December 2021. The only exception will be casings suitable for retreading or validated reuse. Peter Taylor OBE, Secretary General of the TRA has urged DEFRA Secretary of state George Eustice MP to closely study this change in Australian law and consider whether the UK should follow a similar path. To ensure the future of environmentally responsible used tire recycling in Europe, the Alliance Future Tires (AZuR) has drafted a resolution directed at European policymakers. The widely recognized resolution calls for all tires used within the European Union to be recycled or repurposed within the EU.
