Rubber from end-of-life tires acts like sunscreen for roads and halves the rate of sun damage when mixed with bitumen, new research by RMIT University and Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) has found. RMIT University engineers collaborated with Tyre Stewardship Australia to discover the perfect blend that is both UV-resistant and withstands traffic loads, with the potential to save governments millions on road maintenance annually.

This is a Federal Government Accredited certification which recognises Fulton Hogan for playing a role in utilising Australian generated tire derived materials, contributing to a sustainable society.

Acording to the recent case study by Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA)., Rubber T-Lok – a new generation of safety barriers made from tire-derived materials (TDM) – offering enhanced safety benefits, a longer life span and cost-effective solutions for a variety of industries. An innovative use of tire derived material that will enhance public safety and support the recovery of end-of-life tires in Australia – 1 kilometre of T-Lok barriers uses 12 tonnes of recycled rubber which is the equivalent of 2,000 passenger tires, and it is projected the product could use up to 60,000 (360 tonnes) passenger tires per year.

According to Bayside Council (Sydney), in June 2023, Bayside conducted a trial using recycled rubber from end-of-life car and truck tires in the asphalt mix for the first road on Willison Road, Bexley, Sydney. The roadwork resulted in an impressive appearance and sturdy performance. This paving initiative, involving 12 Sydney Councils, aims to achieve significant environmental and economic benefits by incorporating recycled tire rubber in road construction. An initial 3,600 standard passenger car tires or 2,400 car and 490 truck tires combined will be used in the crumbed rubber asphalt trial project, involving 12 Councils in the region.
