Qatar is now attempting to advance the reuse of scrap tire rubber in order to stop tire incineration – when scrap tires are burnt and not recycled, they generate CO2 emissions. Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) represented by the state program Tarsheed is behind the new sustainable effort. Kahramaa’s aim is to cut CO2 emission by 7 percent in 3 years. To attain this objective, the organization will encourage the locals to start actively reusing tires in decorative art works and installations and in sports.

Pyrum Innovations AG (Pyrum) together with the recycling company REMONDIS have announced the starting signal for planning a Pyrum plant for recycling used tires. A letter of intent was recently signed for this purpose. The plant will be located on a site owned by Weserport in Bremen, a subsidiary of REMONDIS sister company Rhenus. It will have a recycling capacity of 20,000 tons of old tires per year, from which the raw material carbon black will be recovered.

Smithers has just released the full agenda for Sustainability in Tires 2023. The event takes place this October 12-13 in Shanghai, China and online and will again gather industry professionals and stakeholders in the global tire industry to discuss the latest trends, future outlook, new materials and technologies, EV tires, sustainable development, OTR tires, and more.

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers’ Association (USTMA) seeks to advance a sustainable U.S. tire manufacturing industry through leadership, partnerships with other stakeholders and a commitment to science‐based public policy advocacy. This year, the Association launched a survey available online at sustainability.ustires.org In its recent press release , USTMA highlighted that sustainability drives the business practices and operating principles of the United States tire industry, from engineering innovations that maximize tire longevity and performance, to ensuring driver and employee safety, to preserving the environment throughout the life cycle of a tire. Those efforts and more were captured in the first sustainability report of the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, published in 2019. The report laid out USTMA’s sustainability visions for the industry and reiterated its commitment to working toward these visions in partnership with relevant stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, legislators, regulators and NGOs. In that spirit, USTMA conducted a materiality survey of its members and stakeholders in Spring of 2020 to help maximize alignment with their sustainability priorities in future USTMA programs and communications.

According to the latest Smithers’press release, the Carbon Black World 2023 Conference, organized by Smithers and supported by the local host partner Jiangxi Black Cat, was a great success. 20+ speakers and 400+ delegates joined the conference in Jingdezhen, 11-14 April 2023.The conference brought together an international audience that spanned the entire value chain, including producers, end-users, equipment suppliers, and solution providers across the tire, rubber, plastics, compounds, and ink industries. “We were delighted to bring the Global leaders of the Carbon Black value chain to China, the world’s largest carbon black market.”, said Ciaran Little, VP, Americas & Asia Pacific, Information Division at Smithers. “The event provided a timely forum for discussion of the key opportunities and challenges in the sector and a vital platform for collaboration and future partnership.”

Tuesday 24 September sees the largest gathering of the UK tyre recycling industry to discuss the challenges of today and the opportunities of tomorrow. Over 50 businesses are expected to be represented to hear from the leading industry experts and analysts at a time when the new government needs to focus on some crucial decisions to enable the industry to succeed. Without an update to the regulatory framework many fear the imminent demise of the UK’S domestic tyre recycling industry.

To further increase its contribution to reducing the harmful effects of industrial waste on the environment, APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria has started a pilot using paving blocks made from recycled used tyres for exterior paving. This was announced in an APM’s recent press release from December 2, 2021. Studies have shown that recycling tires helps reduce the effects of harmful chemicals on the environment. Recycling also prevents tires from becoming breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests such as malaria mosquitoes. The company is running a pilot project with a Nigerian recycling facility, Freetown Waste Management Recycle Limited, to use the paving blocks at the terminal and potentially recycle the terminals own used tires in the future. Following the pilot the sustainability of the solution will be evaluated.

The Tire Cologne, which ended on Thursday, 26 May 2022, returned after a Covid imposed absence with a series of panels on tire recycling. Representatives of the renowned in tire recycling industry British magazines Tyre and Rubber Recycling and Retreading Business successfully presented at the Tyre Recycling Forum of The Tire Cologne.

In the most recent Tyre & Rubber Recycling Podcast, Michelin and Bridgestone's Call to Action received a good response. Tyre & Rubber Recycling's editor Ewan Scott met with a number of pyrolysis operators and inventors after the Smithers rCB Conference to find out what they anticipated the impact will be on their industry. The 28th episode of the podcast features video comments from Thomas Sorensson from Enviro, as well as feedback from Rob Harper from CIRCTEC and Pascal Klein from Pyrum Innovations.
