Continental Tyres has warned that a lack of awareness around used tyre disposal is leading to retread-suitable carcasses being wasted, while some fleet operators may also be missing out on potential financial rebates by failing to return used tyres to manufacturers. The company highlighted retreading as a key tool for managing the volume of waste tyres generated by UK fleets each year. In a Continental-commissioned survey of more than 700 UK-based fleets, 26.8 per cent of respondents said they did not know whether they had an agreed disposal method in place for used truck and bus tyres.

End-of-life tire recyclers and retreading companies will be able to compete in several nominations next year as part of the 2022 Recircle Awards that praise sustainable businesses, recycled tire rubber products and management teams in the tire recycling sector. The winners will be announced on April 25.

Kal Tire – a Canadian tire manufacturing company – has certified its carbon calculator capable of determining carbon and fuel emissions that retreaded tires managed to prevent. Moreover, Kal Tire also announced that it is set to launch Maple Program that can estimate damage caused to the environment by a customer. The Maple Program relies on Kal Tire’s new carbon calculator’s data when it provides a customer with one to five stars as it estimates the proportion of their fleet running retreads instead of new tires.

On September 16 and 17, 2025, the Alliance for the Future of Tires (AZuR), in cooperation with KRONE, will host the 2nd AZuR Retreading Summit at the KRONE Trailer Forum in Werlte, Germany. This two-day industry event will bring together stakeholders from logistics, the public sector, industry, research, and the retreading sector to discuss practical solutions for sustainable fleets and a closed-loop tire economy.

German authorities have endorsed a tire retreading initiative from the Innovation Forum for Tire Recycling (AZUR) that is expected to commence soon. The organizers say that the program will last for two years. According to AZUR, the majority of funding (70 percent) will be provided by the DBU (German Federal Environment Foundation). All other costs needed for the program’s implementation are expected come from several crucial partners that include Marangoni Retreading Systems, Reifen Hinghaus GmbH, Kraiburg Austria and others. The expected program will assess the life cycle of retreaded end-of-life tires and rolling resistance measurements. The organizers of the new initiative are hopeful that it will help to promote the idea that retreaded tires are the perfect examples of sustainable products, and people’s attitude towards their use will become more positive as a result.

AZuR – Germany’s innovation forum for tire recycling – reports that with three workshops on the topics "tire recycling", "retreading" and "pyrolysis" the AZuR network has successfully started its active work. The project, which is financed by the funding guideline "Innovationsforum Mittelstand" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, was very well received by the economy, science and also politics. "We had three very exciting and above all productive meetings in which the discussions were very open and differentiated", says network coordinator Christina Guth.
