Velorim, the UK-based initiative for recycling bicycle tires and inner tubes, has announced plans to double its collection points across the country by 2026. With over 600 locations already established, the organization is working to make cycling more sustainable by offering an easy and cost-effective solution for managing tire waste.

Large industrial companies are involved at a crucial point in the process of sustainable tire recycling. AZUR network coordinator Christina Guth welcomes the joining of Zeppelin Systems GmbH at the turn of the year: "With the Zeppelin systems, the tire recycling cycle is efficiently closed." Zeppelin is one of the world's leading system manufacturers that specializes in the development of components and plants for the handling (storage, conveying, mixing, dosing and weighing) of high-quality bulk materials. Michigan has halted the long-standing practice of burning scrap tires for energy, following a 2023 change in state law that removed tire-derived fuel from the list of renewable energy sources. The decision, coupled with the decline of biomass power plants, has left recyclers and policymakers searching for alternative ways to manage the state’s 10 million discarded tires annually.

ITOCHU Corporation, headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, recently announced that it had agreed the acquisition of Murfitts Group Ltd, headquartered in Lakenheath, U.K., a tire recycling company based in the United Kingdom. The acquisition has been made through the ITOCHU subsidiary European Tyre Enterprise Limited (ETEL), a a tire wholesaler and retailer based in the U.K. In the United Kingdom, ETEL operates an extensive network of retail centers, under the well-known Kwik Fit brand, and nationwide wholesale tire distribution through Stapleton’s Tyre Services.

InvestChile is the Chilean government agency responsible for promoting Chile in the global market as a destination for foreign direct investment, serving as a bridge between the interests of overseas investors and the business opportunities the country offers, providing world-class services that are in line with Chile’s economic development policies. In December 2021, the Agency reported that as a part of its “European Roadshow”, InvestChile’s Managing Director Andrés Rodríguez Rowe, together with the head of the Investment Promotion Division, Salvatore Di Giovanni Vergara, met in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with Maarten Van Randeraat, the owner of Granuband – an established tire recycling company operating in the EU and US.

Eagle International – a renowned manufacturer of tire cutting and tire recycling equipment – has been working with various tire recyclers in the U.S. and Canada to improve the way tires are reduced and recycled. The Nebraska-based manufacturer makes tire shears, derimmers, bead removers, and sidewall cutters to handle small ATV tires up to giant OTR tires. Eagle International has developed a new machine in their portable OTR downsizing equipment line: The Punch Cutter III.

Arkansas' tire recycling program is struggling due to chronic underfunding, with scrap tires piling up across the state. The program relies on a state-mandated fee, but rising costs have outpaced revenues, leaving a funding gap. Efforts to increase tire fees have faced resistance, including a 2023 proposal that passed the Senate but stalled in the House, partly due to concerns over higher taxes.

In 2024, Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC), in partnership with Liberty Tire, coordinated 20 tire collection events across British Columbia (BC). These events successfully collected 14,221 orphan tires. This achievement was made possible through collaboration with community groups, regional districts, municipalities, and Return-to-Retailer locations (R2Rs).
