Episode 49 of the Tyre Recycling Podcast run by Ewan Scott – chief editor of Tyre and Rubber Recycling magazine – features Krzysztof Wróblewski, CEO of Poland-based Contec. Contec recently made a ground-breaking announcement about a significant 10 million Euro investment in their tire recycling plant in Szczecin, Poland. This follow-up interview centers upon that announcement.

Enviro – a renowned tire pyrolysis equipment manufacturer who targets recovered carbon black and fuel oil – reports that its pyrolysis technology is in high demand in the North American market. The company currently has active memorandums of understanding (MoU’s) with three different parties in the tire recycling industry, as well as ongoing discussions with additional interested parties. CEO Thomas Sörensson and the Enviro team recently returned home from the US where they visited, among others, partners in the states of New York and Texas where recycling plants are planned to be built. “There are several reasons why we are more active than ever in North America. The market’s need for carbon black is expected to increase as the establishment of virgin production is becoming increasingly difficult due to stricter regulations and penalties, implemented to overcome the environmental problems created by the existing carbon black production”, says Thomas Sörensson.

The USTMA along with other organizations such as Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) identifies itself as an advocate for sustainability promoting environmental protection, economic and social development. The association has repeatedly emphasized that it is attempting to advance and support sustainability, including tire recycling practices. This goal was voiced once again by Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president and CEO during 2018 Rubber Recycling Symposium – the event sponsored by the USTMA, TRAC and its subsidiary eTracks Tire Management Systems.

In the beginning of February, a tire pyrolysis plant of Kargro / Dutch Green Carbon in Nederweert, Netherlands, suffered from fire. No one from the company’s personnel, nor from the residential area adjacent to the plant was injured. The fire department has taken control of the fire and has stated that no increased quantities of dangerous materials have been released.

At the Future of Retreading and Recycling Conference conducted at Autopromotec on in May 2022, industry professionals highlighted numerous noteworthy tire recycling and retreading topics. Italian Autopromotec, a trade show for the automobile aftermarket that increasingly incorporates recycling, was one of the biggest and most informative events of late spring 2022.

Cement company Argos belonging to a larger Colombian conglomerate used over 75,000 tons of waste as energy source last year – this amount represents all waste, including scrap tires, that a city with population of 200,000 generates annually. Moreover, the company’s alternative fuel control system at cement plant in Cartagena uses scrap tires and helped increase co-processing capacity of Regional Colombia by 200%. Following the success, the company signed an official document in which it set forth its commitment to sustainability vowing to rely on alternative fuels, including scrap tire rubber, received via recycling.

Eighths Biennial Scrap Tire Conference organized by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and Scrap Tire Research and Education Foundation (STREF) will take place on December 4-5, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. The event will pay special attention to the subject of sustainability and circular economy, and will discuss how scrap tire market can carry out sustainable practices. During the conference, the participants who are involved in tire recycling industry will get a chance to take part in discussions dedicated to the new trends in circular economy practices, what challenges and opportunities may emerge on the scrap tire market. The presenters will talk about rubber modified asphalt, tire-derived fuel, as well as tire pyrolysis and devulcanization.

MEPs from the Industry and Research Committee and the Finnish Presidency of the Council informally consented to new law targeting car and truck tires that would change the way the products are labelled. New information that the law wants to make visible for consumers include tire fuel efficiency, rolling noise and wet grip. Possibly, the label will also have to include info on tire performance on ice and snow. Mileage and abrasion performance data would be required after availability of a testing method is secured. It will be obligatory to put not only labels but QR codes on products.
